Dracarys stainless steel lower vent replacement

Anyone have any experience with this lower vent replacement offered by Dracarys? I like the idea of the punched steel mesh instead of the screen material that comes OG with the BGE but wonder how much (if at all) this would affect airflow?

I'm only interested because my egg has been kept inside an enclosed porch since I've have had it and the screen has already crumbled. It wasn't poked or bumped, it simply rusted and dissolved. And I use my egg at least twice a week. Most weeks more.

Shout out to BGE customer service however because they sent me a replacement no questions asked, but the metal parts warranty only runs so long and I don't want to replace the screen vent every 12-18 months.

No more tears from coal clumps getting caught in the screen!

More restrictive would actually be good, then dialing down would be easier than trying to find the width of a credit card.

how long is the warranty on the vent and screen?

I don't think coal was the cause my lower screen getting a hole in it. Mine just began to rust to the point where I now have about a quarter-sized hole slowly getting bigger in the bottom vent. Performance-wise, there's no difference, but it does look a bit shoddy and I don't like for my grill to look sloppy (on the outside).

No worse than @northGAcock's memorable location for a propane shutoff valve.

I don't know if they are still available al'carte but years ago my dealer sold replacement screens for just $5. In fact I retrofitted two of my lower vents to accept the screens since they didn't have them. In short order using a slotted screwdriver I widened the tracks so the screens would fit.

I couldn't care less about the screens to begin with. Most of the time the bottom vent is open so little that the odds of sparks popping out thru the opening is almost nil.

Yeah, mine being messed up doesn't affect my grilling but I can't stand how it looks.

Just remove it and throw it away then. Spend the money on lump, or a good steak, or some rub, or...pretty much anything else. :)

See, that's the normal, rational approach to this. But I'm OCD...

And if a screen is supposed to present on the grill in the lower vent then it has to be there and look somewhat nice and not resemble the undercarriage of a snowplow truck that's seen a few too many miles on salty roads.

I guess I've got my BBQ Comp. team name now: Lunatic BBQ. I'm sure that's been taken though.

Eggs haven't always had that screen so if you remove it you're just going "old school" or "retro". Should satisfy the OCD.

I've had that happen a couple of times with sparks popping out the top while lighting the lump. BGE should do something about that.

    You mean CDO.

If you really had it, you would insist on the letters being in alphabetical order.

If I had that on my XL I'd have to empty the ash more than every couple of months.

I assumed as much. Just pointing out that sparks can pop out from other unprotected points.

Wise people don't use grills on combustible surfaces to begin with. Just sayin'. :)

Where are you located? It seems odd that the screen would disinetgrate like that, unless its an older egg with a non-SS intake. Do you cover the egg? I 've had my eggs outside, uncovered,  in very humid Houston. Screen is just fine. The one time i started having mold issues was when I thought they needed to be covered.

If its just the look of the rusty vent thats bothering you then this Dracary one may work for you, I guess.
