Do you rub your handle with oil?

I was rubbing a little veggie oil into my Lodge cast iron skillet after cleaning it after doing smash burgers and wondered if the handle needed to be seasoned after each cook as well.  When you guys season after cooks, do you season the entire skillet or just inside?

It doesn't hurt. The oil will create a moisture barrier to help prevent any rust on the handle.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I never have and have never seen any rust there. I assume the natural oils from your hands protect it. I just wipe a little on the inside and let the handle and outer surface do what they will. The handles are all nice and clean, the outside of the pans are all well crusted like a pan you'd see in an antique store (which is where I got most of them).

Most of mine look like this.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I usually hit the handle top and bottom, all sides of the pan with the paper towel...doesn't hurt like Smokey says.

Ah, okay.  I'm doing the entire thing each time and didn't know if I needed to.  Thanks for the tip!

Looks a little grey to me Q.  You need to use that #10 more.  ;)

If your cast iron is well seasoned and you keep it dry in an air conditioned environment, it's not going to rust. I've never had any rust in over 30 years using cast iron. Applying a coat of oil to protect between uses allows for the potential of the oily film turning rancid. I used to see rancid pans/Dutch ovens in our scout troop all the time because some assistant Scoutmaster thought he knew when he was doing coating those pans and putting them up in a chuck box.

How often do you season, then?

Never after the initial seasoning. Cooking seasons it. Bacon grease, general frying etc.

Just don't clean them with soap. Scrub with water only.

The #10 is larger than I usually need. It doesn't get used much.

But I do wipe a light coat of canola on after each use. I've never seen, smelled or tasted any signs of rancidity on any of my dozen or so CI pans. Maybe that's because I've never let any Boy Scouts or Scoutmasters near my CI. Or maybe it's because I always scrub them with hot water and dish soap after each use. =)

Like most of us, I had always heard NEVER to do that, but one day I was at Mom's (I guess she was about 98 or 99 then) and I saw her scrubbing away on a small skillet - with hot soapy water. Dutiful son that I am, I told her she wasn't supposed to do that. She explained that it had been working quite nicely, thank you very much, for as long as she'd been using cast iron. BTW, she'll be 101 on the 4th and is still doing it!

I also read a Kenji article where he explained soap and water. Made sense to me. Here's his article...

    And here's Mom's pan...

@Carolina Q  great story about your Mom.  I'm in the no soap camp myself, but I don't have the experience of your Mom - happy b-day to her.

@Carolina Q - Congrats to your Mom and her upcoming birthday.  Talk about living well, sure sounds like she has and is.  Nothing like a little fireworks in her honor.  Enjoy the celebration.  You are fortunate beyond words.

Yes, I'd say she has lived well. =) And she enjoys "her" fireworks and brass bands every year.

Did she have a killer cast iron recipe or two you'd be able to share?

I just started using a lodge skillet, my first cast iron skillet. After cleaning and heating I apply a light coat of oil on skillet including the handle. Then I heat it up for a few minutes on the stove top prior to storing.
