Flameboss 200 vs 300

Anyone have experience with these? Is the 300 worth the premium? I have an XL that I'll use it on 90% of the time but I also a have a UDS at our summer place I'd like to use it on occasionally. I figure I can buy either the universal or kamado version and then buy the the adapter kit for the "other" cooker. Am barking up the right tree here? I realize I could get on the flameboss site and probably dig through it for the info, just figured I'd get quicker, better, more honest feedback here. Cheers

I have the 200 and most times that fits my needs well. I bought it before the 300 was introduced. Not going to essentially buy it again to get the extra meat probes. If I need more then I drag out one of my two Mavericks and use them for the other probes. I put the FB probe in the main chunk of meat and use that as my standard for the cook.

300 can monitor up to 3 meats vs. 1......it also has some circuit board improvements and the ability to transmit directly to a smart phone app (no internet or network required).

I can use the App with my FB200. At least I can see previous cooks. Won't try controlling it until Monday's cook.

Maybe I'll ask for one for Christmas.

I use a BBQ Guru 25cfm (bought on sale for something else in mind) with my FB200.  I already had guru adapters for the SBGE and LBGE. Screwed on PVC elbows to the intake pipes of my drum smokers , and the guru fan pops right on.

Recently , I used foil to macgyver a connection between the standard FB fan and the air intake on my smaller drum. Worked perfectly to maintain 150F and smoke some sausage. So may not need adapters after all.

Correct, but the 200 has to have Wi-Fi and an internet connection to feed the app.  The 300 can broadcast it straight to the phone--without the Wi-Fi or internet connection.  So if your connection goes down, their server goes down, or you're at a competition were you don't have Wi-Fi, you can still control & receive notifications within a certain radius.  Pretty slick upgrade, even though most won't need it.  What most will be able to do is set up the initial connection and Wi-Fi through the app......previously you had to enter it through the unit which was a long process.

@stlcharcoal Is it using Bluetooth? Also, what's the range on it?

No, it broadcasts its own Wi-Fi network.  So your phone/tablet sees and connects to it like it was a router.  BT range sucks, especially when you're going through a wall......so that's why they went this route.  I'll grab a 300 from the warehouse tomorrow and see what kind of range I get out of it.

Sounds interesting but I'll have to sell my old one first. Wife is giving me a hard time about my spending at the moment. to be fair I am retired and should be spending less.

Maybe I Can get demo unit someday to evaluate and blog about. I want to start a cooking on the egg blog and then a YouTube channel.

I'm with you on this, @SaintJohnsEgger. My 200 is still doing great work and I have a Maverick and a Thermoworks Chef's Alarm if I put more meat on.

    Good stuff guys.

@stlcharcoal- the main reason I want to use the FB on my drum is so that when we're on the beach or whatever, I can check and see how my cook is going. It sounds like I probably don't need the 300 to do that. No? As for using it on the XL, I'd like to do some overnight stuff. It generally speaking cooking on thy thing is my therapy. I rarely take off from the house or go to sleep when I have that thing chugging away.

You can use it on a drum.  They make a 3/4" NPT adapter w/ larger fan for it.  Then switch back to the kamado one when running your XL.  The extra fan kit is not very expensive......much less than the Guru fan & adapter.

I've done 6 butts on my WSM with a dome therm and a Thermapen.

What do you need 3 meat probes for???

I had the BBQ Guru and it was horrible on WIFI part. Controller worked great but you couldn't monitor cook unless you were a network engineer. I bought a FB 200 and it was like night and day. So much better. The only hard part was entering the WIFI password on the device. I just fried mine yesterday in the rain, downpour, and I didn't have it protected  enough (just bought a Dribox). Either one will work fine but I just upgraded to FB 300. The new Apple app works great but still needs a couple of items finished.
