Just moved from Nor Cal to north Massachusetts and its nearly impossible to find Tri Tip out here. Looks like prices and quality vary significantly with online retailers. Any recommendations from people that have ordered online?

Don't know about mail order, but if you have a Trader Joe's in your area, they routinely carry them here. You may want to give the flat iron cut a go in place. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

Thanks @lousubcap...there is one about 15 miles away, but all the cuts that I've seen at TJ's before are already marinated. Have you seen them sell plain Tips?lousubcap said:Don't know about mail order, but if you have a Trader Joe's in your area, they routinely carry them here. theres a place in dracut, Brown & Budnick Meats, call ahead as they are small and be prepared for sticker shock.

@cmac610 Here they are offered marinated and plain. Hope you have a similar choice.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

My experience is to NOT purchase a SRF Tri Tip, as $80 dollars for a miserly 1.75lb roast left me feeling very angry.
My advice is no matter what you buy, don't settle - order the 'Prime' ...I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca. -

the place i mentioned the tritips were about 22 to 25 bucks last summer in dracut, beef seems to be up right now so a few bucks more. other places in the area with good selection but no tritip is the butcher boy in north andover and mckinnons in salem nh, pretty sure theres one south of you. they wont have tritip but there meat is high quality. market basket has the tritip steak cut that i use in stirfry and more recently in pho this winter. theres another cut you might not be familar with, flap meat sometimes sold as sirloin tip in new england. cook it like a tritip but pay attention to the cutting angles shown in this link. market basket will have these 4 to 5 in a pack, takes marinade really well. http://www.seriouseats.com/2012/05/the-best-inexpensive-steak-for-the-grill-part-4-flap-meat-sirloin-tip.html
