When doing a reverse sear how long does it typically take you to get up to searing temps?
perhaps I'm just impatient, but I always feel like it's too long.

Leaf blower, about 20 seconds, and I am not kidding.

Open the bottom vent, lift the lid and let 'er buck. It'll be hot in 5-6 minutes.Coleman, Texas
Large BGE & Mini Max for the wok. A few old camp Dutch ovens and a wood fired oven. LSG 24” cabinet offset smoker. There are a few paella pans and a Patagonia cross in the barn. A curing chamber for bacterial transformation of meats...

All of the above, and even a heat gun or hair dryer to accelerate.

I've tried hitting the coals with the looftlighter again, but I may be closing the dome too soon. I'll definitely give the leaf blower a try next time to speed things up.Large BGE

Just needs air. Unassisted, I agree with @SciAggie
If I am running at 350 and have 12 pieces of chicken on there, before I am done flipping all of them, flames are shooting up.

wouldn't the leaf blower cause ash to go everywhere?Cooking on a LBGE and MM down in Miami, FL.

I've never had an issue with the time needed - and the longer I've held at 250 the faster it seems to come up to sear temp. 5 to 6 minutes sounds about right after an hour holding 250Doug

I like the idea of lifting the dome and letting 'er rip. I really don't need to monitor the temperature with the dome closed - I just want a bed of lava for searing over.

Well, you don't go at it full blast, just enough air to get the coals glowing good and hot. If some ash flies, and it will, just blow it away. You do have to be careful not to hit it with such a blast of air to send embers flying.HurricaneEddie1 said:wouldn't the leaf blower cause ash to go everywhere? -
Usually 5 or so minutes here. I pull the adjustable rig out, set the cast iron half moon on the fire ring, and open up the smokewear cap and bottom vent. Works great.Highland, MI

If I open up the bottom and take off the daisy wheel, it takes upwards of 20 minutes to get to 600. 5 minutes would be acceptable, I would like for that to be the upper limit.Large BGE

Too fast for you to throw it back on in my opinion. The meat needs to sit out so the internal temp begins to fall....or at least stops rising. This will allow you to get a good sear and maintain your desired internal temp. Letting it sit out for about 20 mins or longer means you can pull it off at your internal temp during the roast.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html
