Cast Iron for Large BGE
Dece
Posts: 2
Hey guys,
I'm wanting to get some cast iron for my large egg and was wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations? I am pretty OCD so I am not a fan of anything rectangular because of the fit. Ideally it would be round and cover most of the surface inside the egg. Am I wrong in thinking that a traditional cast iron skillet would be frustrating when flipping burgers/steaks etc because of the deep ridge, and may not fit because of the handle sticking out? Here are a few of the products that have peaked my interest, but open to any and all input. Is there any concern with any of these products regarding their ability to take on the high heat of the egg? Thanks in advance!

A number of people suggest cutting off the handles of CI skillets for egg use.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Above all, have fun.
If you are primarily focused on burgers and steaks for the searing properties, then you should give a good reversible round griddle a look. FWIW-

It's not cast iron but I'm debating buying one of these just because I can't find a CI without handles.

Before I made the above comment I did a google search with "round reversible cast iron griddle" and got several hits. I don't recall the specifics but all were much less expensive than what you are looking at. I have a small (10") CI skillet that I removed the handle from so that it fits on the SBGE. Works great.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Check out the 16" from Cabella's. Fits perfectly on the large. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Outfitter-Series-Cast-Iron-Skillets/727438.uts

For $45, you can get the 14" Lodge mentioned above. If the handles bother you, they're easy to cut off.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

If I didn't have various antique griddles and sizes, the Lodge pizza pan would most definitely, be in my lineup.
Fighting the walls of a skillet does suck for searing. Works great for other things like pan pizza, cornbread, mac n cheese though.
One can never have too much iron IMO.

This is what you want if you can find it. It has a removable handle and fits the large BGE perfectly. I've used one for many years and it was very affordable. I think I paid about 20 bucks for it.

I bought a 15" Lodge Skillet from amazon. Cut the handle off and it works great on the large. Like @lousubcab said earlier a 10 1/4 with the handle cut off works great on the small or to just open dome sear on the mini.

lodge makes a really neat little 5 quart dutch oven with a lid that doubles as a cast iron pan. The lid has two short handles so it is perfect in the EGG. My all time favorite is the Lodge covered enameled braiser. Very useful pan.

Ok this thread has me digging deep into the interwebs to find a good CI with a removable handle. This is a pretty cool looking one from Japan. Same one was on ebay as well.

I have that 14" Lodge Pizza pan, fits perfectly in a Lg. Egg and I love using it. Would absolutely recommend it to anyoneLBGE circa 2016

Lodge P14P3 fits the LBGE in all applications. Like @Focker I have so many skillets it's impossible to say which one's to buy. Pretty much anything that fits will word if it doesn't fit...you can make it fit with simple mods. All of these "fit" the large including the Lodge L17SK3 with only minor tweaks.

Thanks for all the help guys. Ended up going with the one from Academy. Couldn't beat that price and it was exactly what I was looking for.

Prop 65 is the direct reason you can't buy Rockwood charcoal out there. I'm sure @stlcharcoal could write a few pages about dealing with Prop 65.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

There's even a chemical in coffee beans that emits something than falls under Prop 65......so technically Starbucks is supposed to put that label on their coffee. But they had enough money to ignore it, sue the state, and of course they won.
You're right though, it's ridiculous how much stuff falls under Prop 65. Pretty much anything made out of plastic has it on there. And when that label is on half the crap sold, people are not going to pay attention to it. After 30 yrs, it's time to go in a fix that stupid thing.

lodge 5qt double dutch. Lid doubles as a fry pan, handles are truncated ears and super easy to deal with and you get the deeper pan for frying, baking and additional searing when needed
