OT: Century CC Boats

I was curious if anyone has had experience with Century boats (I know a little about them), and could provide any insight that you may have? I have found a 2001 23 foot Center Console that has caught my eye, this boat would be strictly for the lake getting from point A to point B, I will not be towing it a whole lot. Thanks

I looked at them a while back and ultimately decided to buy a Sea Hunt instead. I remember the hulls were pretty heavy which made for a good ride. I don't remember if they are Coosa foam filled or not. The engine is what you need to pay attention to. Never ever buy a boat unless you get the engine checked out and a compression test at a minimum.

Thanks for the input, I think the motor may be the only downfall right now as it appears to be the original, it is a 250 though and he claims it has been regularly maintained. If they weren't so expensive I would pull the trigger on a new Robalo, they have done a really good job with those.Birmingham, AL

i like the hull design other than it looks a little narrow. you are not going to have any problems with that hull in a lake. i fished on one near hateras, was a little tippy in the crazy surf they have there but i dont see that problem in a lake. 23 feet is perfect, not too big or small. cc boats dont sell well up north but i assume they sell well in the south, whats the engine and what year, im a big fan of two back there nowadays, is there room for a smaller kicker if the engines getting up in years
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
It is an 01' 250 hp Yamaha Salt Water Series. I can only go off what the guy has said but it has supposedly only seen salt water once and has been used in GA the majority of the time.Birmingham, AL

I think the Century's are 20 degree deadrise which should be a good balance of smooth ride and stability at rest in a lake setting.fishlessman said:i like the hull design other than it looks a little narrow. you are not going to have any problems with that hull in a lake. i fished on one near hateras, was a little tippy in the crazy surf they have there but i dont see that problem in a lake. 23 feet is perfect, not too big or small. cc boats dont sell well up north but i assume they sell well in the south, whats the engine and what year, im a big fan of two back there nowadays, is there room for a smaller kicker if the engines getting up in years -
Like I said earlier. Get it checked. I had a buddy who bought a used bass boat and the engine blew a month later. His $5k hobby boat turned into a $20k investment in less than 45 days.stonewh said:It is an 01' 250 hp Yamaha Salt Water Series. i would do some research on the motor, have him do a test run with you on a lake. my experience with 2 strokes is that they either last 2000 hours or they last forever, that ones past 2002 hours. ive done very little work on my 2000 115 merc, mostly rubber gas lines screwed up from ethynol gas, starter motors which i get rebuilt locally etc. im thinking i have over 15000 hours on it now. if you buy it really watch the 2 stroke oil level, the alarm for low level may not be working, thats where the engine blows usuallystonewh said:It is an 01' 250 hp Yamaha Salt Water Series. Good friend told me years ago...When buying a boat, unless the motor has a warranty or is checked out by a qualified mechanic, assume you are only buying the boat. Don't give the motor much value.DoubleEgger said:The engine is what you need to pay attention to. @fishlessman I was actually looking at that one just a little bit ago on BoatTrader, the one I am talking about (same boat) is only about an hour south of me, and roughly $8k cheaper.Birmingham, AL

Just remember that BOAT stands for "Bust Out Another Thousand." Good luck if you go ahead with the purchase.MMBGE / Large BGE / XL BGE (Craigslist Find) / SF30x80 cabinet trailer - "Ol' Mortimer" / Outdoor kitchen in progress.

I've got a Sea Hunt BX21 w/ 200 ETEC.....very, very low hours (<50). Always slept indoors. Excellent dry riding boat. Afraid if I pull it out to wash it I will end up putting a For Sale sign on it. Don't know much about the Century brand. The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

I agree with what others have said. Make sure the motor is in good shape and has enough life to last as long as you plan on owning the boat. A new motor will be as much (probably more) as your whole purchase.
If you plan on putting a lot of hours on it from point A to B, look for a 4-stroke. Also, some engines, especially the earlier 4-strokes, had design problems. You can search the web and look for trends and learn on what might be more likely unreliable.
