Mystery of why Basques disappeared from Costco solved?
SWMBO spotted a fresh stock of Dragon Breath at one of our local Costcos today. Anyone used it?
Highly recommended by @nakedwhiz although the review was done in 2008:

I just bought 4 bags of ML, there's always room for morecanuckland -
Basques. But I'm going to pull your lowes trick on the ML. Standing by for your review of dragon breath
-
@chuckytheegghead I don't think you can go wrong with Dragon Breath. From what I've read, it burns hot, long and produces little ash.canuckland
-
is it made in Canada?
Edit: Nope.Dave

You guys beat me to it, I was at Costco last night Warden and Ellesmere one and I saw the Dragons Breath, 20lbs 13.99 bought 2 bags to try, hope its as good as the Basques Green and White bags I loved... Still have 3 left of those.Toronto, Canada LBGE

Have not cooked with it yet. Decided to open a bag carefully to inspect, partly to decide whether it's worth stocking more if Costco puts it on clearance in late summer again.
The lump smells neutral and 'feel' well carbonized if there's such a thing! Here are pictures of sorted contents with yardstick for scale...
Largest:
Medium:
Medium+Small:
Dust: (small shallow bowl, not bucket!)
Happy with the size distribution, better than the Basques bags I opened lately.
Caveat: This bag is probably better than average because I avoid battered/abused bags.canuckland -
@Canugghead did you fire that up yet? I see they now have that out my way as well.
-
I was at Costco in Guelph last week and they had lots of basques? In the bush just East of Cambridge,Ontario
-
It seems very spotty. They had basques a couple weeks back and we nearly cleaned them out. Now they have dragons breath.
-
Sorry @chuckytheegghead not sure when I'll get around to trying it yet, been busy. Few days ago I noticed they're gone or sold out at my local Costco.

Hey Gary, I saw that too. I like the stuff, used to be my go-to before Costco started carrying Basques.Sudbury, Ontario

@Little Steven ya I need to get a life or abandon my retirement
@Sammi thanks for the confirmation, go for it @chuckytheegghead !canuckland -
So I finally tried the new Dragons Breath available at Costco in Ontario Canada, it sparks a lot, and gets very hot I find, hotter than the Basques Green and white bag they use to carry. I am not too fond of it, the smoke is a stronger flavour than the old stuff, but it does light fast. Glad I only bought 2 bags!Toronto, Canada LBGE

I noticed that as well. ^^^^^^ I will wait for a fresh skid. I still have some maple leaf in the garageIn the bush just East of Cambridge,Ontario

Finally fired some of this up tonight. As @YYZegger said, stronger smoke flavour. Also, not a fan of this stuff. Took forever for the white smoke to clear and it tasted like eating off a campfire. Glad I only purchased the one bag and seriously doubt I will finish it. However I'm sure there will be some who enjoy it.
-
@YYZegger @chuckytheegghead Thanks for sharing, still haven't tried the bag I opened (has been using several other assorted open bags instead). Looks like I may have to return the other four unopened bags since I visit Costco weekly anyway.canuckland

I bought 3 bags recently and I agree that it leave an acrid unpleasant smoke on the food.

Maybe we can all fill out those feedback cards to get Costco to bring back the good stuff ... Down to my last bag!Dave

I sent a message to Cost-Co telling them how disappointed I am with this product and if it is possible to return even though I did not keep the receipt.
Gerhard -
@gerhardk yes, you can return it. They can look your purchase up with your membership number.
-
I'm going to get a pallet of basques natures own (green and white bag), anyone want to split on it. Toronto to niagara. Let me know.
-
Basques red and white 8kg bags are 14.99 (reg 19.99) this week at Lowes, sale ends today midnight PT. Online order can be picked up in store free shipping. If you sign up and let them spam you, you get $10 off first order of $50+
Dragon's Breath is 14.99 at Costco this year. As usual they'll probably go on clearance for 9.99'ish at end of summer. I tried a bag last year, mixed with other brand, didn't notice anything bad.
