Broken Plate Setter

My plate setter finally bit the dust. It was negligent on my part, I left it out and the wind knocked it over. I've been looking over the adjustable rig for my large. It seems to me like that's the way to go from here. I've also heard that CGS sometimes has seconds on their ceramics...does anybody have any experience with those items?

When my plate setter dies I'll most likely get AR.

When my platesetter dies, I'll use my $14 weber grid and three carriage bolts. That's what I use for raised direct now. All I have to do is stick a pizza stone on the lower grid and I'm good to go. Can probably use the broken PS for that matter, depending on how badly it breaks.

I simply have no need for an AR. An excellent product, but even Tom agrees that I don't need one. I just don't cook the volume of food that would make it useful. I could probably use a Woo, but I'm okay with homemade. =) Someday, I'll upgrade to a stainless grid. Right now, the lower one is BGE's old porcelain and the upper is weber's plated one. Both fine til they rust. I do like the handles on the weber.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • I have both the AR and the PSWoo. I use the Woo 10 to 1 over the AR. Just like its simplicity and ease of use. It stays on my Egg 99% of the time.

AR is legit and Tom of CGS is awesome but, there are many options.
Like Michael @Carolina Q a homemade raised grid was my go-to for years. Now I use SW's The Stacker for direct, raised direct and in conjunction with the PS for indirect on one or two levels.

I certainly never meant to imply otherwise. I have never heard a bad word about Tom, CGS or the products. As I remember it, we had a brief email "conversation" a few years ago. I explained why I didn't think I needed an AR. Many (most?) small business guys would probably try to convince the customer otherwise. Tom said, "You're right." Stand up guy. When you hear guys say, "You can trust Tom, he won't try to sell you stuff you don't need"...believe it.

Whenever I decide I need anything he sells, he'll get the call.

I have the AR, Woo and round stone from CGS.  A replacement for plate setter would be woo and round stone.  Use info at CGS website for proper size stone or give them a call.  While my plate setter is still useable, I haven't used it since getting the woo and stone.  The AR is for multi level cooking when you need more space.  So replace your plate setter with woo and stone and you will be forever happy!  Add the AR for big cooks and you have all bases covered.

@Carolina Q Michael I wasn't trying to imply anything negative. Merely in agreeance regarding use of a homemade raised grid. Tom also gave me great advice that was not to his immediate financial benefit. I've purchased items for the MM from him and in the future if the need should arise I'd happily more from them.

To answer the original poster's question about the second quality ceramic stones from CGS I have the 16" round as well as the oval stones. They are both seconds and have had them for about 5 years and work fine. They are not always available for sale though.

If my ceramic platesetter were to fail I think I would get the cast iron replacement. I mostly use a two tier swing rack from CGW and I like this setup.

@MattBTI: FWIW, i wish i had been patient enough to wait for cgs order when i got my first bge, an XL.  I would have saved hundreds of dollars.

Anyway, the cgs multigrid adj rig, rig extender oval grid slide guide with spider stone setup is what you should get.  I wouldnt wait on seconds and returns unless you have to due to $ reasons.

You will never look back once you get these items!

I think I'm going to start slow. My plan is to purchase the Spider and 13" stone this week so I can continue cooking indirect. I plant to add the adjustable rig and associated accessories as I go. Just not sure what set up on the rig I want to start with considering the price.

I always get the woo and spider confused.  With the AR I have the woo to put the stone on, would a spider provide anything different??

@westernbbq My understanding was that the spider can be used with the AR, however the Woo can not.

Yes you are correct. Plus the spider is great for elevating a stone, and for wokking

The woo is just the spider with a 3" tall ring that allows the grid to sit at the feltline. I cooked on both last night.

I've come up with about $120...I'm thinking another $65 wont be too hard to part with...although I'll probably hear about it later (planning our wedding coming up in Sept). The R&B Oval Stone Adj. Rig Combo is what I've landed on after much thought.
