Cracked XL - A Sad Day

My XL base has a crack.  Anyone know the best repair for it?  I have submitted a warranty claim, but it's a sad day.   It only lasted 2 years.

No repair. It will make a nice planter though :)

Mine's been like that for maybe 18 months, doesn't seem to be leaking air or getting larger.  I did get the warranteed base, just haven't swapped it out yet.  I probably do need to make the switch now though.

No big deal...just send your dealer a close up of the crack, a wider view and a picture of the receipt. The way the warranty is written you "may" have to pay shipping...depends on the dealer. I built a second XL from a cracked base, a cracked fire box and ring that were covered under warranty. Bought the newer high dome for all the warranty parts, used the low done on the Cracker. Cooks just fine..

It should be covered by the lifetime warranty. Just contact BGE customer service and they will take care of it. I have had two domes replaced, and the fire ring no questions asked.
  • Ouch, but that's what the warranty is for.

I have a new base coming, but would like to repair this one.  Hopefully to create a second cooker.  Any ideas?

I have had to turn in both of my XL bases that cracked to get the new ones.

  • I agree with RedSkip. Many repairs on eggs and plate setters are done with jb weld or something similar. Maybe I am worrying for nothing but I would not want any of those chemicals in my egg. If I had a cooler that was repaired with that stuff I don't think I would be concerned, but I imagine the heat in the egg would release some of those chemicals. Plus, who wants a duct taped egg?
  • Not worth the risk of keeping it. I've never understood the mentality of using cracked parts for reuse-especially bases. If it's bad enough to complain and get warranty it should be bad enough not to reuse. But that's just my opinion and I'm sure others will disagree.

I've replaced my XL base because of cracks a few times (The XL bases seem to be prone to crack). I wouldn't attempt to repair or reuse it. I sit one of my cracked bases on a 24x24 paver in the back yard and use it as a fire pit.

  • I would fill it up with ice and put beer in it.

At least everyone would stop arguing over Yeti vs RTIC as a superior cooler.

I did same thing...built second backup xl with cracked base just for keeping things warm...like wrapped brisky or shoulder.

I thought i was doing something wrong with bge and was the only one with cracked xl base...well maybe because of you guys and a few others ive spoken to bge should beef up its design on the base of xl...

I must say I am disappointed it only lasted 2 years.  I am thankful for the warranty though.  Still it is a hassle if I'm going to have to replace it every couple of years.

  • A house fire is a bigger hassle...be careful using a cracked egg.

I've had my XL three with no issue.  Even hit 700 last night.  I've wrapped the thermo too without issue.  Luck of the draw.  Granted, I run 250 - 400 for an hour or so if I'm going to really heat it up.  No full bore till the outside gets hot to the touch.
