automatic draft systems.....remote monitoring

edited April 2017 in EggHead Forum
just want to pose this scenario to the kind folk who are all about putting their auto draft systems on the world wide web....

you get up ~ 6am one Saturday morning and prep your protein for a long, low and slow cook. You have your Stoker, Cyber Q, or FlameBOSS all set  up and have tested the configuration to ensure you can monitor the cook while you and your significant other go shopping because she has stated for the last three weeks she wants some time with just you and her...YAY!!

The Kohls, Marshalls, and Home decor places are all ~ 45 minutes to 1 hour away with weekend traffic......

You start your cook between the hours of 8AM and 9AM and leave once you are certain the temp has stabilized around ~10 or 10:30AM.....

Your so excited that you can login from your smart device and monitor the temp of the cook that you have set for 260 degrees...

Its 12:30 and you check the temp and its steady as a rock...your so proud and a little prideful that you have this technical ability that most mankind have yet to embrace...

At 12:30, the "other" decides that she wants to go to a restaurant that puts you another 45 minutes away from the house....NOT TO WORRY!!! you think in your head, as the cook will be going for at least another 5 to 6 hours....

You eat lunch, have good conversation...once finished you glance at your watch...it 2pm..WOW!...let me check to see what the OL' temp is running at...

the phone comes back with a temp of ~360 degrees....HUH?!!...well that just can't be right...must be something wrong with the probes......gotta be something wrong with the probe....

your palms get sweaty..your heart rate increases..and you tell your "other" we need to leave to check on the dinner at home because your smoker is getting " a little out of hand"...

her not knowing the extent of "out of hand"...and she is wondering why you are diving like a bat of hell to get home...and when checking your phone for temp...it is now reading ~500 degrees...if your probes were not messed up, they are now...

once you arrive at home, the phone is now just showing "ERR" on the program and your cooker is ~675 degrees. The 50 dollar brisket your were gong to have can now be separated and laced up to wear as a pair of sandals..

So I say that, to say this...

Why would one want to put one of these on the web...

If your close enough to get back to your cooker in a reasonable time frame, a automatic draft system is not necessary.

I thing they are great for monitoring the cook why piddling around the house or going to do a quick errand, but for anything more than that is undo stress in the event of a failure...

I guess i bought my cyber q so when I'm out in the field i can keep an eye on things and know when to come in.   I'm a dairy farmer so i don't have weekends to devote to my cooker like most other people can.   I love being able to check on my protein and pit from my phone.   But that being said.  I'm never more than 5 miles away and can almost always drop what I'm doing to physically check on it if need be.   That's my purpose for using it. It lets cook easy more often.

The Flameboss will operate without assistance from the web.  If your egg is set correctly, the fire will go to 25 or so degrees below the set point when the blower stops pushing in air.  When the probe starts reading above your set point, then the blower stops.  This is not unlike how the DigiQ operates.

The SmoBot unit will also operate with the web.  When the pit probe recognizes the temp going over your target, it closes the top vent completely and the fire is choked down.

Can't comment on the Stoker since I've not owned one ...

You really should see someone about your fears ... or, take up writing fiction novels.  Cheers ...

I don't go shopping with the wife!
I stay home and watch college sports. And with my Stoker, no need to go outside and miss the game.

So post a screen shot of the graph, or we're calling BS.  How can you get an egg to 675F with the chimney cap nearly closed??  Doesn't matter how much you blow on the fire, if there's nowhere for the exhaust to go, it not going nuclear like you describe.

Clear case of the stuxnet virus.  It also ruined a bunch of Iran's centrifuges.

You need to mitigate this disaster in future iterations.  Some suggestions:

    1) Be more careful with your websites (like pr0n)
    2) Avoid clickbait
    3) Set your top vent almost closed
    4) Be less like Iran
    5) you're = you are (contraction)....your = possessive adjective
    6) don't piss off the gubment (they wrote the damn thing)

^What he said. Quit using old US made centerfuges with Iranian IP addresses to power draft your egg.

I had to move an old dresser to my dad's, filled up the KBQ firebox with sticks, and let the 30 min countdown begin.  Made it back just in time.

Have run errands without a controller for years.

Use the fb 200 now, but don't use the wifi on it, zero issues.

Can only speak for the Flame Boss. It operates with the daisy wheel  barely open.

If the FB quits, the fire slowly goes out. There's simply no way for the Egg to get to 675 with the daisy wheel barely open, and the bottom vent is closed with the fan adaptor.

The web application is nice. I don't have to be in Blue Tooth range or rely on short range RF to see the cook - I can just check my phone.

Now, once we receive a credible threat of hostile nations seeking to demoralize the populace by hacking into our on-line BBQ controllers, I might reconsider.   =)

Gotta be honest, I'm moving if it takes an hour just to get to the stores to run errands Lol... but I'm with ya. I'm not one to use gadgets. Feels like cheating. Hell, using the egg normally is so easy it's like cheating.

I don't see using a controller as "cheating". I am also well versed at setting temps manually but it's nice to let technology take the driver's seat from time to time, especially when it's brutally cold outside (I've cooked in a blizzard using my Flame Boss and stayed warm inside watching the temp track perfectly), or you have matters to attend to and have no time to check into the cook - just check your phone.

It's not a crutch...it's just another tool to use for a successful cook.

Stuxnet made my blower spin too fast.  It knocked over my egg and I was devastated.  Then a sugar glider showed up and distracted me and all was well.  Happy Friday!

I do believe you remove it for anything above 200F. Airflow is airflow.
