Lid adjusted correct?

Just got this from a dealer on Saturday, the top lid isn't lined up with exactly and the gasket is burning on the hangover inside

That off-set is pretty common.  The real issue is the dome to base fit.  Give the seating surface the dollar bill test to see if you have any air leaks.  Place a dollar bill on the gasket, shut the dome and pull out the dollar bill.  Should have some resistance the entire seating surface.

I would love to see an egg completely pass the dollar bill test all the way around. Not saying it can't happen, but I doubt it can happen ;)

Never flunked it here.  Should be the norm not the exception.

That is called "under bite" - not really an issue, but to some folks it is. If you want to chase the correction steps I'll be glad to share them. BUT if you aren't a patient person or handy then "let it be".

Mine has a slight underbite but no smoke loss at done and base meeting point.  If you don't have a gap that's letting air in then I say cook on!

Agree! - problem is - many times people feel for the price paid then the dome and base should match up both in color and upon closure - but that doesn't always happen. While these are fired ceramic pieces they are not fine China so perfection doesn't happen.

Well the dollar bill has resistance all the way around, a little tighter on front half but back half still has some resistance
i just smell that gasket burning and it stinks but hopefully that goes away after a while

The less the resistance the more the leakage which means the planes of your dome and base are out of whack. The leakage means escaping heat which will shorten the life of your gasket. I'd be glad to share some pointers on how to adjust the planes - if you are inclined to do so - meaning loosening the band bolts and reseating the dome to better match up with your base. Some guys will want to do this but some won't - so it's your call!

Your planes are out of whack. First figure out where the space is and how much. IOW Is the back sitting down first or vice versa?

Then depending on which do this. For instance if the back is sitting down leaving the front open...

Place 1 or more quarters on the gasket edge at the back and close your dome. Then loosen your band and press down. That should raise the rear a bit, but tilt the front of your dome downward. Tighten bolts, then remove the quarters. Since the gasket will absorb some of that thickness when compressed you might want to start with at least 2 quarters or even 3.

Run the test again with a Benjamin and that should resolve any issues... ;)

  • We fix this problem by pulling the dome forward before tightening the top band (creating an overbite so to speak). Tighten up the top band and it will pull it back even to the bottom.  If you start out even it tends to pull back a bit and creates a minor underbite as you have now.

    Congrats on the new Egg.

Mine is further out of line than that and it bugged me at first, but I don't have any leaks and I don't worry about it anymore.
