DigiQ DX2 upgrade to Flame Boss 200 - My 2¢ Worth

I bought my DigiQ DX2 from BBQguru July 2014. It worked great for 16 months when the probes failed.  BBQguru customer service told me to do the following:
  • Wrap the area where the cable meets the probes in aluminum foil.
  • Run the cables down through the daisy wheel and NOT between the two dome halves to avoid flame-ups which can destroy the cables,
  • Never exceed 500°F (I never exceed 375°F anyway)
  • Never allow the cables to kink.

BBQguru customer service was always very kind, responsive, and helpful.  Once they sent me a pair of replacement cables.  I have since gone through about 4 sets of expensive probes and one fan. When the new fan came in the controller started to fail and that is when I ordered the Flame Boss.

It occurs to me the Flame Boss fan is more efficient.  With the DigiQ DX2 I needed to let fire build up much longer and hotter before I could install the fan and close the dome.  Flame Boss 200 allows me to start cooking much sooner.

Having the ability to monitor and AFFECT the heat (the WI-FI option) is fantastic.  I get real-time data on the use of the fan and the temperature of the pit and the meat probe and I can make changes at any time.  I use my iPhone and my laptop, but it should work on anything with a browser.

I'm in the same boat. I have the Digi Q and been really considering going to the FB200 for the wireless option.

I've never had any problems with my probes. They have been wrapped in foil since new and I run them between the base and the lid.

My new FB200 is currently running my first trial with it.  Just cooking a couple of 10lb butts as a test.  I plan to cook 4 more for the Superbowl festivities.

I now know what everyone raves about with this thing.  Truly an amazing addition to my outdoor kitchen.  Today was the first time I felt comfortable leaving the house during an all day cook.  My cell phone let me see the cook right up to the minute.  It has held my pit temp within 4-6 degrees for 7 hours and not once overshot it.  Love the open dome pause feature too.

No more worries about overnight cooks and waking often just to check on things, even with the Maverick wireless that was my first purchase.
Titusville, Fl. and just bought XL and Med BGE.  "Every Day is A Bonus" in my world, and my job is to choke the life out of them. Cancer Sucks.
  • I have a FB200 as well, love the thing. Always run probe wires between base and lid. On my XL I always have the daisy wheel closed up to the point that there's no way I could run the probe wires through it and keep my temps down.

i have the CyberQ the wifi on it sucks honestly you can only see whats doing on network and i have to do some changes to the network to do that. other then that i love it. but now I'm looking at the Flameboss i haven't really heard anyone having talking bad about the flameboss.

but the question i have is this... The CyberQ you have a kill plug, do you get something like that with the Flameboss? the fan on the flame boss kinda looks like a cheap piece of plastic but thats just from looking at youtube and photos what do you guys think? what do you like about it and don't like about it?

The fan case is sheet steel, not plastic.  After owning the DigiQ, I also thought the FB fan was cheap ... turns out I was wrong.  I've owned my FB200 for almost two years and it is still working flawlessly.

The adapter is a simple stainless steel plate with a rectangular hole in the middle.  Not as elegant as the DigiQ adapter, but again, the darn thing does it's job flawlessly ... plus it's easier to store than the DigiQ's adapter.

No need for a plug.  Lift the blower off the adapter, open the lower egg door, remove the adapter plate, close the lower egg door ... you're done!!

Michael says he runs his fan in the rain - that's in Florida - and has not had any problems with it.  When I protested, he shared that they have had very few warranty claims on the fan unit.

I like that I can leave the FB in charge for night shift and go to sleep comfortable that it'll alert me to any problems.  I have a long, loud, and obnoxious ringtone on my android set for texts from FB ... wakes me up better than my Maverick alarm.  And, no false wake-ups like my Maverick did every time the signal faded.

Wifi hookup doesn't take a trained IT mastermind ... it's like hooking up your iPad.  Well, except for scrolling linearly through the alphabet to type in the password ... you only have to do it once, so it's not a showstopper.

The FB200 does it's job, the price is reasonable, and the service support is extraordinary ... can't ask for much more than that.

I'm happy with the DigiQ, and I make sure the wires are shielded from the heat below by placing them over the legs of the platesetter before I close the lid on them. In several years there has never been a problem with them.

Can't really call it a fan case. The fan mounts to the steel blower chamber but the fan is mostly exposed. The fan is thin plastic. Mine cracked around the edge. The molded plastic seemed very thin in this area compared to the other side. One photo to Flame Boss and a new fan was on the way. Just hard to top their customer service.

I know the FB continues to receive rave reviews, (which I don't own) and I am sure I would love one if I bought it.  Just wanted to say that I have the CyberQ and the PartyQ, never wrap the probes, always lay across the gasket and have never had a problem in over 5 years.  I have also been able to use it right after lighting the fire.  I have never used the plug.  The CyberQ is a bit complicated with the port forwarding, but once it is set, works great!

For those that might not know, The Flame Boss 200 is being discontinued for the Flame Boss 300. The basic kits are the same price and include newer probes that can handle more heat. The unit looks and operates identical but using optional "Y" adapters, you can add 2 extra meat probes for a total of 3 meat probes.

@Photo Egg ... Okay, I'll give you that the blower "proper" is plastic and only the ducting and support are steel.   Hmm ... that's like the DigiQ which has a plastic blower and steel shielding!

Okay, I've got to ask, how did you break the blower case?

Thanks for pointing out the temp difference in the newer FB probes.  Good to 575 degrees is right up my alley.  Followed @Ozzie_Isaac 's advice and stopped foiling my original coated cables and managed to burn off the coating on the meat probe.  I knew I shouldn't have listened to him ...

Wish I could tell you how I broke it. Only used it once. Kept it in a box with a couple other things but it was never abused or dropped. Plastic on that side, just feels weak. Maybe just a molding issue?
Except for some wiring inside and the 2 screws holding it to the blower adapter, the entire fan housing and squirrel fan blade thing is all plastic. Take of the 2 screws and the fan weight is almost zero. Not a bad thing in my area to be plastic. I just think this one might be poorly molded. Pressing with your thumb would crack it more. But Flame Boss customer service is awesome.
I found replacement fans on eBay for less than $6 but they shipped from overseas. Who knows how long to get it. I contacted FB asking to buy another one. Even though I believe I did not destroy this one I could never try and pass it off as defective. But they would not let me buy it.
    Thank you,

Until jumping in with smobot, which I hope comes to fruition, I was fairly certain I was going to get the Flameboss 200. Who knows, maybe I'll still end up with one.
