Going price for a new Large band?

I have a friend in another state who is not on this or any BGE forum. His large band busted and the dome dropped on his wrist. He needs a new band and was quoted $150 from a dealer. I told him I thought that was high. Any help???

Ron, that may be purdy close as it's right in the middle between the current large and xl bands.

     Not covered under the warranty?

If you had asked a couple hours ago, maybe I could have looked. Sorry. That is if they are on my price sheet yet.

Have him call or contact Bruce.  Worth a try for sure.  Band snaps lands on wrist? I think Bruce would help.

  • I heard $133. For those that have not heard, the new large bands have some tabs that keep the dome from falling out if the bands loosen up.

I believe the warranty on bands is short like 1 or 2 years.

Thanks guys - sounds like $150 would be right then with sales tax.

Thanks but my friend is in IA. OTOH I woils be leery of any band being sold second hand that way - wondering why and inspecting it like crazy whether cheap or not.

If things are still the same as they were quite a few years ago, the warranty is five years.
  • Never mind the band; how much will the new wrist cost him?

Unfortunately, our warranty ends at birth.

He has since told me his egg is 16 years "young" so warranty doesn't mean jack squat!

Right price.......it has the tabs to hold the dome, plus the springs are at the 11 & 1 o'clock positions and operate like the XL.  Much easier to open.

I think I have magic eggs. The domes are so much heavier to lift now than they were when I got them years ago. Apparently I have a magic toilet as well. I changed one out recently. The bowl seemed to weigh at least 30 pounds more than it did when I put it in about 15 years ago. What is the old saying, time is cruel.

I need the new bands too. My bands have always been junk since day one. The bolts consistently come loose no matter what.

I have no way of knowing , but often wonder if some people aren't tightening them enough. The bolts should literally deform. Not saying this is your issue, I'm am just "spit-balling". That's why they need to be grade 5 bolts. I have heard of people replacing them with grade 8 which is a big mistake. That said, those who frequently do high heat cooks(700+) will likely have more movement due to the expansion and contraction of the bands and associated parts. Good luck. If you get the new setup, please report your thoughts.
  • @FATC1TY Does that mostly or only happen after high heat cooks or a clean burn? That is what I deal with. The nuts never come loose, the bands stretch. If it is the nuts getting loose try double nutting.

Good advice, Pete! In addition I'm a big believer in double nutting and I have yet to ever find any of my bands to be loose...I mean EVER! To those that the term double nutting is a mystery it is merely a matter of running a second nut tightly up against the first which as Pete says bends the bolt. Double nutting is an old mechanics trick.

It's a little unnerving the first time you wrench those bolts down. In the back of your mind you think you might break the ceramics LOL. I tell guys that if you break it I'll give you another one on me. I like to show them how the bolts bend so they truly understand the concept. I've never double notes my own, but how can that not help. Prolly about a dime investment.

Bent for sure. They are tight the done and base aren't loose. It's my hinge that acts like a POS.

Literslly the the worst part of a BGE in my opinion.

    Not much thread left
on the bottom hinge bolt to double nut. When you tighten it down the lid is almost too hard to even open.

Sorry to hear that. Hope the new set up helps. I've always preferred the L hinge to the XL, so I'm a bit nervous about the change up, personally. Everyone who has touched the new one says it's a winner, so fingers are crossed.

You could just put a lock washer. Even you ever change the bolt make sure to use the same grade because those bolts are stronger than what you find in the bin at Lowe's or HD. Make sure the markings on the head are identical.
I do not understand how the dome is harder to open depending on how tight the bands are. The bolts on the hinge, yes, but not the bands.

Correct, I'm not talking about the band bolts, but rather the hinge bolts. My band is fine. The hinge is the issue that continues to come loose, and out of kilter. Or rather, was never proper to begin with and has constantly gotten worse.

Hoping the new hinge system will punch my ticket, curious of the cost, if it would be a warranty replacement. Although I can't recall the time frame for warranty stuff on hinge and bands, I suspect I'm past it, or very near it if it's 5 years.

Agree the old hinge sucks, thinking they know this hence the revision. Still dealing with mine but waiting for reviews of the new design.

Many years ago it was 5 years, I would imagine it is still the same. The new large bands cost $133.
  • Anyone have a picture of the new design for the Large BGE hinge/band assembly?

I got a new band myself. Sent pics and finally hooked up with BGE about issues. Would have been fine buying me one cause I hate hate hate what I had and how it aligned and worked.

Duane was easy to explain issues with. Saw my pics. A little patronizing about my explainstions and what he deemed "too much" but in the end ourside of offering a fix which I had tried all I could, I had bands in less than 2 days on my porch.

I dont know who in their right mind would want to subject themselves to the job but I hope it fixes my issues and will report back with pics
