New Dome Thermometer

I need one. Is the BGE/TelTru thermometers as good as the regular TelTru thermometer?

Smokeware has the coolest looking thermos I have seen, I just don't know if they last like the Tel-Tru does. Do they have Smokeware products in stores, or is it just online? Thanks for the replies.

A Tel tru is a Tel tru. I'm running a SW on my oval and my demo egg at the shop. No issues so far.
  • What is the longest any of you have used a Smokeware? Hopefully they did not just hit the market.

Couple years I think. Maybe not quite that long yet.

2 years on mine (I have three).  No issues.  The few issues I have heard of were immediately handled by SW.  No questions, just apologies and a new thermometer.

I wrapped my smokeware thermo a while back and it wouldn't adjust and hold temp. I had to toss it. The original tel tru is working fine after wrapping it way too many times.

Did you contact SW?  I have wrapped mine a few times with no issues.

I wrapped one, then tossed it in the snow.  Then put it back in my nuclear egg.  That was a demo unit they sent me while they were adjusting face fonts and pointer size/shape.  It is still on my XL.

No I didn't. It was one of those older BBO models. I was my fault for wrapping it.

Funny, but lots of people still like the ole red white and BBQ ones you describe. Not my style, but really easy to read due to the contrast.

My Tel-Tru just died.  I got the multi-color, black face SW one in the mail today.  Looks like it can be calibrated too, FWIW.  I am really liking it and have not even installed her yet.

How long does a thermometer typically last?  I had no idea they wore out!  Still a rookie!

I have the old style that came with the bge with what seems to be glass.  Buddy bought a new egg and it has a larger dial (+), but after 3 uses (all low temp) the plastic face is showing stress cracks (-).  Is the SW glass?

Anyone make a digital thermo for the dome?

My home bge is oh, 12 yo. I'd like to change it just cuz I like the larger dials. I don't do much nuclear stuff. Hardly ever. I have no reason to get the egg that hot.

Based on what I've seen from my buddy's new one you don't want the new bge large size with the plastic lense.  The dealer indicated it comes on everything large and bigger.  After 3 cooks it's not looking good for long term durability!

If your egg is 12 years old you must have one of the old thermometers, the ones before the switch to Tel-Tru. My old style ones never lasted nearly half that long. I must have gotten ones made on Friday.

Never had an issue. I calibrated it once and it was spot on. I put a SW in my oval and like the size and look, but haven't gotten to changing the egg yet????? Idk.

@Wardster ... be careful ... the non-calibration gauge has a "nut" shape on the backside that might lead you to conclude that it is adjustable.  If you didn't specifically order the gauge that can be calibrated, then you might want to think twice about wrenching on the nut.

BTW ... Smokeware's idea is that one of the main things that causes a gauge to loose their calibration is the steel retention clip on the stem.  Folks rotate the gauge by the face and when the retention clip hangs up the stem rotates and changes the calibration.  By preventing the stem from moving, the average egger will be on temp more than they are now.  I've had a couple of the non-adjustable gauges for well over a year and they are still spot on temp.

Which Tru-Tel do most of you run?  I was thinking of getting one for my BGE.

The NakedWhiz's website says the one with the2 1/2 inch
stem is the one recommended for the egg. Egg dealers sell tel-tru/BGE dome thermometers for about $35.

When the temp is so high it causes the needle to "wrap around" the dial on the face of the thermometer.

Long time lurker here, felt compelled to comment as it would be remiss of the forum not to mention this great thermometer collection which I probably stumbled upon here over the years:
