OT: So I ate a Smashburger for the first time ever. It was ok not great.

I ate at a Smashburger for the first time last Monday. Ordered the classic burger with their skinny fries.
For me it was ok, not great. There seemed to be too much rub on the burger, kind of a garlic salt taste to it.
I prefer grilling the hand made gourmet burgers that I purchase at my local butcher using my grill grates which are perfect for searing burgers.
Just my thoughts, your taste buds may vary.

IMHO, their burgers and fries are way too salty. Plus their service isn't great, at least at the location near me. I think it may have something to do with their line system, which can't keep up when it gets busy.
OTOH, we travel to Cali each summer, and the kids know that the first stop after we pick up a rental car is In-N-Out Burger.
We have Shake Shack in NY, which is definitely OK, but still not In-N-Out!Mamaroneck -
We have Smashburger near me.....meh. Alright but not great. Cheeseburger Bobby's is much better IMO. No In N Out to compare it to though.
Couple of local guys started Village Burger near me that now has a couple of locations......it's top notch. Great burgers, fries and their frozen custard incredible.
Down side of cooking on the egg is much of the protein we used to enjoy eating out is no longer better than what we get at home.

I tried a SmashBurger when they first opened here and have never gone back! Steak'nShake have been doing smash burgers for longer than the hot shot at SmashBurger has been alive! Beside S n S does them better and for cheaper! BTW I only tried 5 Guys twice and never went back there either. A burger dripping with grease is ok, but dripping in peanut oil??? NO way!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

2 Smashburgers have closed near me in Chicagoland and I expect more will eventually close nationwide. Not surprising since the founder Rick Schaden has a history of defrauding franchisees (see Quizno's). They start a franchise and run it well in the short term sign up franchisees and within a few year they become the sole supplier for the franchise and charge a 30% markup on all food and supplies.

I did smashburgers on my CI griddle - Boy was it good. The trick is to properly season the meat by mixing the seasoning in vs just on the outside. Since I was using 93/7, I mixed in a bit of EVOO.
(in the pics, the wife likes thick burgers. Lucky I have both a grate and a griddle in my XL
)
