I've always been concerned that it would provide too much air circulation during low and slows.

I've also figured that it might allow small bits of unused charcoal to fall through, wasting what is otherwise useable fuel on the OEM fire grate.

Not sure either of these concerns are well-founded, but they've always crossed my mind when considering the nearly-$200 price tag to outfit both of my Eggs.

I wondered how it didn't fine blow ash up into cooking area and on the meat during long cooks. Guess it really doesn't move much air.

Too much air circulation is not an issue - air flow is limited by the vents.

Yes some small bits fall into the ash pit. They are the ones that normally cause the OEM grate holes to get plugged up.  It does get hot enough in the ash pit area for the bits to light and since they get air first, they tend to burn up (as long as they don't get buried in the ash), especially after higher temp cooks.

Leaf blower. This what I use to really clean out.   Luckily my eggs sits out on end of stone patio. I don't worry about dust getting in the house.

Yeah I've got KAB.  Just take out and full blast of air takes care of it in 30 seconds. .

    Bad idea?  :-)
My buddy that has a BGE uses this method ... he also uses the blower to quickly get up to temp once the lump starts burning.   Once we had a race to see who could get a meal done faster his BGE or my Sharp microwave ... needless to say Technology won again. :)

What kind of grill marks or smoke ring do you get with your microwave?

In my opinion/experience the KAB is being overthought...in terms of airflow it is no different than a stainless steel replacement fire grate, and is a similar improvement over the cast iron fire grate the Egg comes with, which clogs easily and restricts air flow.  True, the KAB takes up a very small amount of real estate up the sides but I don't believe you could tell the difference in amount of lump. Maybe a couple of pieces, which of course only becomes relevant if you are filling it right to the very top... And just like you would not put a single layer of charcoal over your grate, you'd pile right up to the platesetter, you do that with the KAB too.  When the lump burns down to the handles of the KAB, or lower, it is easy to lift out the remaining lump to clean.  That is all.

Agree. There is no difference between it and the SS grate in terms of performance. The only reason I like it over other devices is for the ability to remove the heat source from the egg for quick shutdown when traveling(like at a tailgate). The fact that it sits so low is a bit of an annoyance, since when I fill the egg with charcoal, it goes up past the fire ring base. It takes 2-3 cooks to even get to the handle level, which defeats the purpose of the device as coals fall into the base of the egg and I have to fish them out of the ash to prevent restriction of air flow. It's an okay accessory, but is far from a panacea.

I steer clear of the microwave. Plays havoc with my tin foil skull cap!  =)
