Ready to fire for the first time

Hello all. New to the egg head experience here. My lovely wife bought me a large egg for my birthday with some extras. I've been poking around on the web for beginner tips and have gotten some good pointers. I built my own table nest and my final coat of sealer has dried. I'm adding my hooks tonight and loading this bad boy in the table. Any pointers for my first burn? Sounds like it's risky to add wood for smoking after the initial fire is started.

Are you cooking or just burning? If cooking, pick something uncomplicated, like chicken breasts. Get your fire going however you decide, let it settle in at your desired temp for a while, and cook away.
I've added smoking wood many, many times during a cook without any issues.

My biggest advice to anyone new is to not assume that your target temp is stable until at least 15 minutes after it has first been reached. If you make any adjustments at all the 15 starts over. It took me a few times to realize this. I guess the other biggest thing is having your daisy wheel open or close when you open the lid.

Soak it all up here on the site. Lots of good people around. The tip I'll give is to have fun with it. It can be a little frustrating at first to achieve a certain temp (and holding it) - you'll get it.Phoenix -
I wouldn't cook anything. Get it lit, and play with the vents to get an idea how it works and where you need to be for different temps. That's the advice I got sometime back and it saved me from wrecking some food. Spent the better part of a saturday doing that, but well worth it.

There was definitely a learning curve with getting the temp to where I need it.
I think my first cook was baby back ribs.
