  • I wonder why they changed it.
  • It looks like there are tabs to keep the dome from falling out if the bands loosen up a bit.
  • It says it fits 2008 and newer egg. What is the diffence between 2007 and 8?

The springs on the side of the band tell me its a little more than just a few tabs...

I believe Primo did something similar to keep domes from falling out if bands are a bit loose.

The haunch on the egg changed. This is the cause of much grief when well intentioned owners misalign their bands by pushing the bands too far up or down onto the ceramic haunch. it appears to me the tab will act as a gauge to prevent this from occurring.

The hinge looks a little skimpy compared to that sweet new Kamado Joe hinge.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

  • @pgprescott, is that the change between 2007 and 2008?

History lesson for those interested. An old time egger named Fred who posted as Char Woody or C~W for short was a tinkerer's tinkerer and he came up with those tabs nearly 20 years ago. He tried to suggest them as cheap insurance for BGE to add which would prevent the dome from falling off. Founder of BGE, Ed Fisher, was not interested, but Founder of Primo, George, was. C~W made them for several years and sold them cheaply to eggers and then quit.

I need. New band. Mine sucks and never would align correctly and consistently loosens up on the hinge section.

Wonder how much that assembly is and when I can get one.

I'm not 100% sure what they are doing with this. The haunch / dome casting changed a bit I think. The newer eggs seem to have a larger depressed area before the thick haunch. The tabs might slide over the haunch area as RRP is suggesting. I don't really see where they would do much. I guess they would buy you some time to notice the loose bands. Personally I much prefer the large hinge to the XL.

I want one too!  Mine constantly loosens due to high heat cooks.  Yes, I have torqued to specs, etc.  Actually bentry the tabs last I'm we tightened and realigned.   Been waiting to buy new bands, and will continue doing so unil this is released!

I should have been more specific - the tabs that C~W designed and made had a bend to them and yes they did grip the dome.

Looks like this new band assembly has bent tabs too. Maybe someone did come around and listen after all?

The Kamado Joe hinge puts the Green Egg one to shame!

I do want this new band though, I saw it on Facebook as well.

Any idea on what price is/will be?

Just a guess, but seems like these bands would cost BGE less to make.
If these function like the bands on my XL I would not want them.

the bands are single movement, not double movement like the xl.   I found they handled opening the dome very easily.

anyone wanna wager on whether kjoe ends up with dome tabs on their bands..........

FYI: The KJ hinge comes from Weber Knapp Company.
KJ uses their Vetis Leveraging Controlled Balance hinge.

I installed the new bands on my large egg this weekend.  I found that the new design was much easier to install and align than the originals.

Yes,  it seems to operate just fine.  I have only cooked on it 2 times since it was replaced.

My biggest issue with the XL bands is having the joint bolts self tighten and lock up. When it does lock up it seems to bend/warp . I'm on my 3rd set of bands. KJ used to have the safety pin in the front of the band. Does their new bands also have?

Anyone try the Kamodo Joe bands on a large BGE?

Every...SINGLE time I do a high heat cook, I get underbite. I can be fine for a dozen cooks, aligned perfectly...exceed 500 or so degrees and it shifts EVERY time. I have tried everything.

Anyway, I got the RPP gaskets and need to change out the gasket on my large, medium and little Joe. If the Joe bands would fit a LBGE, I would switch in a heartbeat

I did read that the KJ band is calibrated for the specific weight of the dome. Has a 3-5 lb lift effort and will stay open at any height above a couple of inches. But maintain enough pressure to seal the gasket.
