3 Minutes and .72 Cents RTIC Fix

I have to admit this cooler is quite impressive. I can't say I would have bought one had I not lost my cooler from the back of my truck a few months ago. Perfect timing with the RTIC sale.

I actually got a chance to put the cooler to use last Friday at Frozen Fest. I haven't found a use for it otherwise with it being winter here in Minnesota. The temps have been in the 50's/60's lately so why not bust out the cooler for some food and booze! The cooler went above and beyond expectations during the weekend trek. The only issue I ran into were the latches. Every time I'd drop the lid on the cooler a latch would catch between the base and lid. Essentially making you use two hands to hold the latches out while closing it. (I know, first world problems.)

*Here's a picture of the cooler 7 days later still holding ice from last weekend. I do understand that the cooler hasn't been sitting in direct sunlight with 90 degree weather but still impressive for what it is.

After getting home I did a little research on the latches. I found people were switching out RTIC latches for Yeti latches. It sounded easy enough but I wasn't willing to shell out $18 for Yeti latches. So with some more digging I came across a guy that found a fix for under a $1. Now we're talking!

I took a couple pics of the process:

I first started out by taking a putty knife to get behind the head of the pin.

Once you are able to get the pin moved outwards I used a vise grip to completely remove the pin.

Here is the pin removed. You're going to add some stainless washers to the pin with the latch to help it from moving around. The washers may very with different sized RTIC coolers. In the video below the guy ended up using two washers for his RTIC 20. I found 3 worked better with my 65.

Here's a pic with the washers in place.

Success!  Latches stay in place when dropping the lid.

Sorry if this has been discussed or brought up already. Just wanted to pass on an easy cheap fix.

Here's the video I found on the fix if interested:

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for posting, that's been my only complaint with my RTIC 20. I'll be doing this.

Haha, thanks. I tinker maybe a little too much. My wife's quote from a few weeks ago, "You love projects. Do you ever finish them?" My response, "Only the ones I like"

Agreed. It was the only issue I had after using the cooler for the weekend. Easy enough fix. Your 20 might only take 4 washers. I'd grab 6 just in case.
