Eggcessories

I got an XL and I'm thinking about buying some new eggcessories. I know BGE has a lot off ehhcessories that are useles. Here is a list of that I got and I was going to get some feedback to see if I need anything else. I got plate setter, pizza stone, dutch oven, bear claws, digital temp gauge, chicken/turkey infuser, high temp gloves, vegetable sautée pan, SS flat kabobs, and cedar planks. Let me know what you think. My wife has gave me the ok to buy just not sure what to get.

You have a nest and mates or table setup?
  • I have a lot of eggcessories also for my LBGE, but I've come to the conclusion with recent cooks that the mates are a prioreity purchase.  I check craig's list everyday looking for a used set.
D'you think I could interest you in a pair of zircon-encrusted tweezers?

I would get an Ott grid lifter, a smokeware platesetter lifter for sure. You use them all the time and never have to touch a hot or dirty grid or PS again.

If you are looking at controllers, I would consider the FB200 or the combo I would choose which is the party q and the smoke. I like the combo because you can use them concurrently or separately. Sometimes you just need a controller and sometimes you just need a monitor. It's a personal choice. The FB is a great product I f you want the all in one unit plus some other neat mapping features.

    I only use a controller 5-10 times a year.

A grid lifter is really useful, I have one.  I don't have a platesetter lifter and it's not ideal lifting it off hot even with HD leather gloves.  Not sure about the powder coated version though, wouldn't that melt all over the stone?  Going to make one in SS.

I love the briner bucket and packets. http://www.thebriner.com/

Also love the smokeware cap. Just makes things easier and more simple. The OEM stuff works fine, but I put the cap on and haven't removed it since.

If you plan/do large quantities of food I would look at an adjustable rig from the cgs linked here:  https://ceramicgrillstore.com
Otherwise, I would jump on a second BGE to enable different style cooks at the same time-many go with a smaller one for the second version.
In any case, welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Above all, have fun.

Nice list. I would add some good tongs and a bunch of aluminum foil half and full pans. Also large box of wide heavy duty foil. Disposable Latex prep gloves(with a nice insulated pair for underneath). Good cutting board and assorted knives including a granton edge slicer, a 10" carbon steel butcher knife(Old Hickory) and a general chef's knife of 6-7 inches. Also a good supply of quality lump and whatever you choose to light it.

I'd vote for a cast iron pan or two and as previously mentioned a Kick Ash Basket.

  • You can wait on the bear claws. Two large serving forks or your fingers will do as good of a job.

if it was me I would also pass on the turkey infuser. Just not much need for it in my cooks. Thought your cooks may differ.

Ill be honest, I was into buying all I could years ago, and have slowed, as you really need to get a feel for what you like to cook and how you like to cook before you go out and try everything.

Sure, new stuff comes along, and we all get suckered in...

However, I'd say, having owned eggs in the past, and owning two currently of different sizes:

Regardless of cooks, I think a WOO is almost a must. The egg is so much better cooking at the felt line. 95% of my cooks are at felt line. I have the cast ion version for my CI grate, but I swap both the regular and the CI out from time to time. It enables burgers, and fish, and quick cooks to be handled easy with a large spatula, and gives you tons of ease to remove and add your plate setter. Which, if you like low and slow cooks and have the need to add wood, charcoal, the WOO is the thing to have.

Second, I'd say the hi que grate. I feel you WILL use more lump in the long run, but you are up to temp faster, it's easier to clean old ash and packed lump up, and quite frankly, it's a MUST on a minimax.

Beyond that, I'd say a controller. If you enjoy really low and slow cooks, like to sleep, cook large cuts, or tend to want to leave the house, or immediate area, then it's a win win. Not the most useful thing if you rarely ever do low and slow, but I find them to be great for briskets, and over night cooks. Even the holiday cooks like Turkeys and Prime ribs that you end up visiting with people and being too drunk, they wont let you down.

You've got an XL.. depending on family size, and cooks, maybe a divide and conquer type of lump basket to save on lump and cook on one side.

Maybe a Spider and CI grate for lump level searing.. Add the spider and a Wok, and you've got your own wok set up that can cook any asian inspired fare you mind could imagine. I really enjoy this in the summer when I can mise en place and then cook dinner on demand for the family in mere minutes.

What about a reliable lighting source? Looftlighter? Weed burner? Blow torch? Could upgrade something like that.

If you cook in the elements, or even if not, a smokeware cap is really nice to aide in the adjustment, diffusion of smoke under a covered porch and looks really nice to boot.

I'd stock up on foil pans and foil from costco.. Maybe some nice cast iron pans, skip the new lodge stuff if you can, and decide what do you like to cook most?

I like burgers alot, so I have a really old, but without a doubt amazing, lokng handled spatula from lambson sharp i think it is.. walnut.. 12 inch handle, it's awesome.

Maybe a SS/CI pizza stone, you can smash burgers on those too, cook pizzas.. sear steak chicken.. it pretty much turns my large into a flat cook top!
