Mangrove and mallee root charcoal

When I moved to Australia 15 months ago, I purchased a large BGE to bring with me because I had heard it is hard to buy them here. I don't know if there are others in Oz that also have a BGE but so far I haven't met any. Living here means that I can't get the official BGE branded charcoal, so I'm experimenting with other options. I found a wholesaler who sells 20kg bags of mangrove charcoal and 30kg bags of mallee root charcoal. I wonder if anyone else on the forum has had any experience with either of those? I find that the mangrove is easier to light, so I use it to get started but try to use more of the mallee since it seems to burn longer. I also am wondering how hot these charcoals with will burn. I recently was cooking pizza and let the BGE go full throttle. The thermometer maxed out at 750F so I don't know how much hotter than that it was, but I had blue flames coming up around the edges of the place setter and the cast iron grid was a whitish grey. Does that happen with other charcoal varieties?

I don't have any idea, but it's gotta be cool to live there. It would be great to have new products to try. As long as you can avoid being bitten or eaten by something it would be a great place to live. I can't wait until I have the chance to visit.
Good luck and have fun on your adventure.
  • Charcoal sounds about on par with typical other types.

    Welcome aboard

is the manuscript fragment part of your day job? Looks like some sort of table of letters or numbers. Byzantine numbers on the right?

That mangrove lump seems to be a premium quality fuel.   Apparently it's exported to Japan and Korea and they're very particular about neutral flavors.

I was searching for an image and just grabbed something sitting on my desktop. Yes, it's a part of what I do for my day job. It's a fragment from the 3rd century CE/AD that was discovered in a trash heap in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt a century or so ago. It's a portion of a set of astronomical tables devised by the famous Ptolemy of Alexandria in the 2nd c. They were used for things like calculating the position of the sun/moon/stars at any given point. Writing is in Greek, because that's what was spoken in Egypt at that time, even though it was under Roman rule.

Very interesting website. I wish I could find the mangrove charcoal they show locally. It does appear to be a premium product.

Today I found a new place that also sells gidgee and red gum charcoal which are said to be even better than mangrove: http://store.aussiebbqsmoke.com/products/lump-charcoal. Haven't tried them yet but I got a bag of the red gum to use for a smoke that I'm planning to do soon.

Welcome aboard and continue to enjoy the journey.  Definitely a different life-style.  (Was there for a year back in the mid 1990's).
You've got the right approach-just give 'em all a go and see what works best.  I seem to recall a few other one-off forum posters from OZ so keep up the search.  FWIW-
BTW- you are not missing anything by not having access to BGE branded lump.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.
