Why is my pizza stone only 12" ?

Happy new year to all.  I was lucky enough to have a BGE pizza/baking stone under the Christmas tree.  Box says it "Fits the large and xlarge BGE".  But it's 12 inches in diameter.  My large egg is 18".  I bought a 16" wood peel.  Amazon has a 16" stone.  I want 16" pizzas.  The question is: BGE does not make a stone larger that 12" ?  Thanks to all.

BGE's 14" is the standard for the large.  12" is standard for small and medium.  But, both fit larger eggs.

if you are planning to use the conveggtor, then 13 is what I recommend.  it matches with the convegggtor's diameter.  you want the bigger blocking stone (conveggtor) on the bottom to give full protection to the smaller pizza stone above.   this prevents hot spots along the pizza stone edges.

On 16" size, best to push it in the dome, away from the felt.  if you are doing thin crust (1/8) and can push it up in the dome, then with practice, you can use only one stone.

I don't know what size "officially" fits a large, but when I bought my large, I added a stone with the purchase. The one the dealer sold me was 14". Not sure of BGEs size range, but it includes stones larger than 14". Should be 5/8" thick too.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Some of the pros on here can chime in if I am wrong. But you don't want a pizza stone that is as big as your  grate. You need to leave some room around the stone for hot air to circulate. But you can get a 16" from The Ceramic Grill Store. Not sure if BGE has one that size or not.

They make a huge one for the XL that no one ever buys. It's like 20" I think. 14" is what literally hundreds of thousands have and are using. Happy egging!
  • Great info, and thanks.  I should have measured before posting.  It's 14".  And 5/8".  Agreed, I'll need room for the air to circulate.  Yes, I plan on using the plate setter, along with four copper pipe elbows for better circulation, and (I read) to have the stone above the felt.   Any other ideas are appreciated.  Thanks.
