Cooling down the XL BGE

Wondering if it's ok after a cook to keep the egg open so it will cool down faster before putting the cover on or is it better to keep the egg closed for the slower cool down?

If left open it will burn extremely hot until the coal is depleted. Its early, but this is in the running for ? of the year...

You have to extinguish the fire before it will cool.... once out, sure leave it open but you run the risk of it getting oxygen and cranking up.

  • I don't cover mine due to storing it on the garage; but, I would shut it down and leave it overnight. The next day open up the top and bottom vents a little and put a vented cover on it. Opening the vents and a vented cover will allow just enough airflow so mold will not grow. My neighbor does this and has never had a mold issue.

Now that I think of it, that was a stupid question.

So so people have had mold issues? I imagine it can't be to much of an issue once you crank it up but I guess it's the clay absorbing the outside moisture.

Mold is an issue if you keep it moist, closed up and covered, and never cook on it.

Crank it up and the fire takes care of anything before a cook regardless.

No mold issue here (last 7 years)... but I do use it 1-4x/wk.  At 4-500, my xl takes 3-4hrs to shut down cool enough to cover, but I now just roll it into the garage without a cover.
