Putting Plate Setter on Hot Grill Risky?

I've only had an egg for a month or two, but I'm real careful to put my cold BGE platesetter on the egg as soon as the coals are fully lit. It seems to me the thermal shock of putting it on a really hot fire could crack it.
But I've read some posts where people say they get their fire real hot, sear a piece of meat, then put on their platesetter and drop the temp for roasting. Isn't this risky? If you want to sear first, then roast, what's the best way?

The only time you might have an issue if it's left out in the rain and you throw it on a super hot egg.

The only danger in putting the plate setter on the hot egg is potentially to your fingers if you're not wearing the appropriate gloves.Cincinnati, Ohio. Large BGE since 2011. Still learning.

Nope! I had to do it once with a wet PS due to rain and the only problem was the temp dropped and took a very long time to come back because the PS had to dry out first.

What gloves do you guys use for removing or adding platesetter?

Welding gloves and a plate setter lifter.

i almost never move my ps when it's hot. But when I do, I just use welders gloves and move quickly. Always have a nearby spot picked out and make sure no rug rats or pets are in the way.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
