question...Egg is frozen shut

in EggHead Forum
just went outside to let the dogs out and was just gonna raise the Egg to look inside, for no reason really...it's frozen shut...I'm not planning on cooking on it for the next few days but is this common?

    It happens, light it from bottom or drop a starter cube in from the top vent ... 10 minutes or so and it should open.

    dont pull it open with force, you'll trash your gasket, patience wins

    There are some posts about putting some spacers wrapped in foil, under the lid to keep this from happening.  Might try this as temps will be in the 20s tomorrow night...

    Don't need or want spacers with the foil when shutting down.  Just layer some foil along the gasket surface when shutting the dome.  Does not cause any air-flow change.  Next AM (or whenever sufficiently shutdown) pop the dome open and if you want put a spacer on the gasket surface, although not necessary.  FWIW-
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    The biggest problem I have is that the top cap freezes on. The gasket is all fuzzy now from the fibers freezing to the ceramic and being pulled out when I pry it off. I wonder if wax or other coating would prevent that? Maybe a little petroleum jelly?

    eventually you will need to change gaskets, the rutland one that rrp sells at cost does not freeze shut. i just learned to egg with no gaskets. dont go prying it open, especially under the handle, there is a weak spot in that location where the ceramic will chip(they may have changed that on newer eggs but i would not chance it)

    Hey there fellow Vol! It happened to me once a couple of years ago. I lit a couple of cube starters just inside the lower vent screen and it thawed enough to open it.

    Permanent solution: Order a Rutland gasket from forum member @RRP and you'll never worry about it freezing again. I just had my original base replaced under warranty and had to install a new one. Here's what they look like.
