When It's Below Freezing In The South

It was 67 degrees yesterday and I was in a t shirt.

Its now 25 degrees and dropping with frozen precipitation on the road. So, we ran out and got our milk and bread (I don't know why), turned on the fire and dreamt up our warmest food we could imagine.

I give to you, red beans and rice with cornbread. Now I have a warm belly, the baby is about to take a nap, and I'm seriously considering pouring a few fingers of bourbon and taking a nap in front of the fireplace.

P.S. For those of you that squawk about not taking pictures with silverware, that is a Noveske Battle Spork. It is the silverware of the War God Odin himself.

Hey when I lived in North Georgia mountains, if the weatherman said the "S" word there was not a crumb of bread or a drop of milk at Ingles by dark. People who don't drink milk must have bought a gallon.
    Enjoy the winter wonderland.

Exactly the same thing here in Dallas.  My wife brought home two filets of fresh salmon.  And my son arrived with venison sausage.  It was about 35 when I fired up the Egg.  Great dinner!

  • The freezer is stocked here on the Southern Outskirts of Atlanta.  Plenty of gas for the genny so I'll have heat and some power.  Meat-a-plenty in the deep freeze.  Just got to up the beer supply.

I remember living in NOLA area years back, every time a tropical storm or hurricane would come near, there'd be a run at the pastry shops and liquor stores.  Lines around the building for the drive-in-liquor store!  Good times!

  • @DaveRichardson we prestocked before the election. We had quite a few little groups threatening the grid if Trump won. Freezer. Gas. Propane. Generator tune up. Etc. Then I looked up and said, "oh no...I forgot to go to the liquor store". Nothing ensues panic like running out of Makers Mark.

  • Easy on the Maker's Mark....  Killed a bottle by myself this weekend at a Christmas Party...  Still don't feel good!

You ever been to their place in Bardstown, KY?  I went years ago and was given a private tour by one of their distillers because we were late getting there for the regular tour!

  • @DaveRichardson yeah we actually are getting a limo and doing a bunch of tours up there when my brother in law gets back from Iraq this round.

  • If you know dates, let the distillers know that he's a Vet and coming back from a Tour on the beaches....  They will make it extra special for him.  I wish I was still a managing partner in our Family's product, Old Forrester.

  • @DaveRichardson man my college roommate also lived down the street from me in college and his dad drank exclusively Old Forrester. I can't even drink it anymore but man...good times were had for many, many years.

  • Brother @fishlessman, ya'll can keep that Satan's Dandruff up there.  We don't want it down here!  I spent enough time in Kentucky in the winter on an open top tractor working on my grandfather's farm; I've had enough.  I'm ready for it better than most down here.

@Killit_and_Grillit - I've still got some of the earthenware crocks that were used as storage vessels, from 1 gallon to 5 gallon size crocks.  We, as the family, still have privileges at the distillery, but not as much as before we sold controlling interest.

  • @fishlessman you can keep that crap. I was stationed in Colorado for 3 years. I cancelled every PT session, field exercise, formation, and PE I could when I was in command during the winter.

My Battalion Commander called me in his office one day after I told my guy's to go home and i showed up in like our -40 degree suit (it had snowed like 3 inches). He said "what the hell!?!"

i said, "sir, when we start fighting the Russians again I will run in the snow. Until then I will be in the gym. Next to the radiator."

Couple of winters ago, I spent about 3 months at Mom's in Virginia... Christmas thru the end of March. Everyone was complaining about the cold. I don't think I ever put on a jacket!

Here ya go, bud... two feet - take the day off. =) (actually, these are from 2013) The first two are my car.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

If I was Pharoh, this would have been the first and only plague that God would have sent with Moses...

And to this day the Jewish empire would extend past the Nile. Like grab your sandals and your golden scepter, I hear Sudan is nice this time of year.

It is for that traditional Southern favorite, Milk Sammiches.  Has been that way all my life.  Strangely, I don't recall ever having one.

However, the people here do go nuts in the winter.  This is from the local morning news a few days ago.  Temp was ~25deg...

Of all the lies I tell, "Just kidding" is my favorite.
