EGGcessories (retail versus MSRP)

I've recently been told by a retailer that the price for their EGGcessories "is determined by the suggested price we are provided by Big Green Egg." I question this statement because his prices (on five items of my choosing) run from 10% to almost 14% higher than the prices of the same items at the BGE HQ Retail Store in Atlanta. I would expect a retailer to be able to purchase EGGcessories at something like a "wholesale" price so that they can then mark them up toward or equal to what I'll call MSRP (the prices at the HQ Retail Store) so that they can make a profit. If the BGE HQ expects retailers to mark the price of EGGcessories up above MSRP, what's to motivate someone living in the Atlanta area from routinely shopping at the HQ? Too far to travel to the HQ and retail is handier despite being more expensive? Retail applies a Black Friday or similar discount (but how often is that and in some cases a 15% discount may still make an item more expensive than at HQ)? I price-shopped a bit and found that prices were higher on 5 out of 5 items at one retailer, 4 out of 4 at another platinum retailer (7.7% to 16.7% higher), and 2 out of 5 at the retailer closest to me.
I intend to plan ahead on the purchase of EGGcessories, price-shop a bit until I'm convinced that that's not worth the effort, and then probably shop at HQ where they've got everything. FYI, I live 9 miles from HQ.

IMHO, you can get better accessories from 3rd party manufacturers, and at good prices if you shop online. The adjustable rig, for example, is much better than the plate setter (aka "ConvEGGtor").

Any shop is going to be able to set their own prices. Their level of service, vs. buying online should be one decision point for you. Their pricing will also be determined by how many other shops are close to them selling the same product, etc.
The only thing I ever warn against, is don't bail on your local guy/gal for a few bucks. If they are within reason, SUPPORT THEM, or one day, you will go there to get something or need advice, and they will be gone.
the internet is great for ease, however, it kills the smaller shops in the world, and then your ability to touch and feel things prior to buying them is gone as well.Just bought an Egg? Here is what you get to look forward to now:
Plate Setter, FlameBoss 200, Spider, PSWOO-CI, Additional Rig Shelf for dome cooking, Thermapen, iGrill2, Cast Iron, Blackstone, Cooking Accessories for the Blackstone, Cover for the Egg and the Blackstone, shopping for Rub like a fine wine or IPA, and a new fascination with lump and what brand is the best-all to be debated every Friday Night. The part is bold may or may not be entirely true...or at least, it may not be the whole story. I have no idea how BGE sets up distribution, but in my industry some manufacturers have policies in place to make sure products are not sold below a certain minimum price. This does a few things:tikigriller said:Any shop is going to be able to set their own prices. Their level of service, vs. buying online should be one decision point for you. -Keeps the playing field level with small shops vs giant online retailers
-Ensures customers don't feel like they're getting ripped off by buying the part and then seeing for sale for considerably less elsewhere
-Maintains brand value
Generally they can't legally tell their dealers what prices to sell things at, but, if they see them selling below the minimum price they can cut them off as dealers.
It's odd however to see retailers selling things for more than HQ. Most people don't live within reasonable distance of HQ, but having prices at HQ lower than other retailers in the area makes things harder for those local retailers for sure.Dustin - Macon, GA

BGE enforces MAP pricing. Can't sell below X. Otherwise, compete.
Minimum Advertised Price is an agreement between suppliers and retailers stipulating the lowest price an item is allowed to be advertised at. If you've ever tried to shop around and keep nosing up against the same number, you may have just discovered that good's MAP.

Many shops are prohibited from advertising below a certain price. But have the freedom to sell at any price. There is a difference.dgaddis1 said:

What accessory is it you are needing? The only BGE one I bought was the plate setter. I have since swapped that for a far better product.
I can't think of one accessory BGE makes that other company's aren't selling that are of a higher quality.VA Beach -

First up, welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Continue to take your time in sorting out the after-market accessories. And as above, there are better form, fit and function toys out there from third-party vendors. Check out this link:

As a Dealer...this is the most accurate statement on this thread.dgaddis1 said:

DHEgger,
If you're saying that dgaddis1's final paragraph is the most accurate statement on the thread, that's in agreement with my disbelief of the statement from a retailer that their retail accessory price "is determined by the suggested price we are provided by Big Green Egg." If a retailer chooses to or feels the need to price their accessories higher than HQ, they should do so and they should provide a valid explanation when their actions (their prices) are brought into question.

I would suspect the Mothership sells items at full blown MSRP? No?

especially since they are the suggester of the manufactures suggested retail price.

The local store I go to was always full of third party accessories. I went in a couple of weeks ago and they switched just about every item to something BGE branded. However, they did manage to find a way to carry Rockwood, which they didn't have before. So I am happy.

My business we are not allowed to "advertise" below a certain price, but we can sell it for any price we want. It's our loss if we go that direction.
My whole thing is dont bail on your dealer for a few small bucks. Bail on them because they suck at what they do and don't listen to the customer and lie about how things actually work.Just bought an Egg? Here is what you get to look forward to now:
