OT - For those in KC or want to know how Burnt ends started

Saw this on TV earlier. Kinda cool, showing how and where they started.  Makes me wish today wasn't Thanksgiving.

    Nice piece, thanks for sharing.

My best friend's Meemaw lives in the hood of Independence.  When asked for Q recommendations, she told us to go to AB's.

We went.  It was great.  We went again, great.  Then one more time, great again.  And we never got "burnt" out.

They are spot on about the, "If it aint cow, it aint burnt ends".

Man I love that tangy, tomato, celery of Gates' Sauce.

KC is king man, zero doubt.  There's a Q joint here in the QC, and Damon's sauce is similar to Gates', fantastic.  It cuts the heaviness and fattiness perfectly, in small amounts.

I'm sure there are probably others better than ABs, but Meemaw is never wrong.  ;)

Your vid makes me want to buy a point from my butcher...been a while..3 years...made chili out of it last month and fed it to my co-workers.

KC, Tech N9ne, Boulevard, and burnt ends, will always have a place in my heart.

I had never heard of burnt ends until I moved here over 15 years ago.  Now, I love to order them.  The "Martin City Mayor" (burnt ends topped with cole slaw on a hoagie) from Jack Stack is my favorite.  And, yeah, served with an ice-cold Boulevard.   :)

Nice! Surprised you liked Bryant's. Most people have to be from here or acquire a taste for the old school places here (gates, Bryant's and LC's) there are two types of BBQ in this city. True KC style likes Bryant's and gates and LC's that have a culture influence on them of inner city style BBQ; Just meat thrown on a pit and smoked and messy. Those are some of the best meals of my life. And something about fearing for my life when I go into the original Bryant's or gates makes the food taste even better. Fear I may be shanked at any moment makes me enjoy my sandwich more.

Then there are the new competition style places like joes and q39 etc. Those are great, but sometimes I'm in the mood for a big ass chopped messy sandwich.

    b,
Great explanation of KC Q.  You are so lucky, to have so many great options.

We didn't make it to LC's, but those are my kinda places.  Dirty, dingy, seasoned, outdated, traditional, character, charm, awesome grub.

My favorite authentic Mexican food here is in the corner of a run down supermarket.  Those are the real gems IMO.  We're not an ambiance, smoke and mirrors type of people here in the QC, which is like KC's little brother.  Those trendy metro places come, and go, quickly.

Have you had the Q39 burger?  I get it, peeps are trying to get creative with it.  But c'mon, it's all ground beef in the end.  The point on top is a nice touch though.

When we were at my buddy's Meemaw's, my truck, with an alarm, didn't feel safe. lol
Next door neighbor had a pit, "Suga".  The guy could get her to run and jump up, clamping onto a tree branch with her jaws, at least 6 feet up, and just hang there.  The entire branch had missing bark.  Won't ever forget it. lol
We all had a ball, in the heart of KC.  :)

Although it's just over a mile from my employer, I haven't eaten at Q39, either.  I hear that the wait times are crazy.

I used to live in KC. Man I miss it. Is Zarda's BBq still in business? Or Sante Fe Trail? My favorite place for chicken was over in Wyndot on 7th. Great memories.

Oh yeah.  One of the locations is just a few minutes from my house.  Zarda isn't great, but I do enjoy a nice beef and turkey sandwich with beans from there!

I lived in Lee's Summit for 7 years and yeah, that is a DANG GOOD hoagie or just plain burnt ends - and Martin City Jack Stack is the best of the Jack Stack locations. Also love their onion rings.  And the coleslaw has to be the creamy style (and little to no garlic).

There are LOTS of really good BBQ places in the KC metroplex. If you ever find yourself in downtown Lee's Summit, do stop in at the Filling Stations - looks like an old Texaco Station - but has really good Q.  And remember, the hot bbq sauce is really hot. I took some colleagues from work their and warned them of the heat, yet they still put on a LOT - and then had the nerve to say "why didn't you tell me it was so hot"... Well, I think I did :)

Thanks for the video- enjoyed the history and run up to the present.  Definitely a unique and signature offering. Gotta admit though, that I have never had a brisket point I would sacrifice to the burnt ends Gods.  I guess I will have to toss that to the experts in the KC area-make the pilgrimage and enjoy.
And in the back of my mind I might be thinking, how would this have been straight-up?  But always looking to experience more.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.
