  • I am assuming your son is young. His appetite will grow and he will bring home friends with appetites. The large is the most popular and I think the most versatile of the Egg family. There are a lot of accessories for the large that are not available for the other sizes. With the large you have the versatility to cook for just a few or for many. A 16" pizza is perfect for the large Egg. :)
  • Well, I'm real happy that I have a medium. Just to answer the question.

As for the gasser, I had one - first I converted it to charcoal, a definite improvement. Then I got the medium Egg. Should have done that in the first place and saved some time and effort.

I have the XL and I say get the LARGE. It is better to have more space than just enough space. I like having versatility and with a Large and/or XL you have that.
    More options.

    Enjoy the EGG.

To answer your question, I'm very happy with my medium. I bought both the large and medium at the same time, but find that I use the medium much more often. I'm cooking for family of four, with two children 5 & 6. I can see that my 6 year old son's appetite is already increasing, so I'll probably start using the large more often.

As many others have already said, having two or more can allow for lots of flexibility.

Oh, and I had a weber gasser that I used for years. I haven't used it once since I got the eggs. And as for speed to get to temp, use a weed burner, mapp torch, etc. With the weedburner, I can go from 0 to 500+ in less than 15 minutes.

I love my medium. Don't let it know but perhaps I'd swap it for a large. From what I read on here the large is easier, the medium is sometimes a little more prone to getting clogged but that's my lazy charcoal management. The med is easy on the charcoal, can't speak for the large.

    You'll be happy with either.

I don't use my WSM much anymore, about to lend it to someone and I have a gasser I only really used ofr bacon.

One day I'll get maybe a large, maybe a small who knows

    Hey Zeke,

I read all of the replies to your question which basically turned into a "buy the large" refrain.

To answer your question, I'm happy with the medium, and have I ever wished I had bought the large, yes at times. But once my feet are back on the ground and I remember it's only my wife and me 70% of the time and 5 of us at most I become very happy with the medium. My no. 2 son who is home from college repeatedly says I continually cook too mcuh food. To be honest with you I am looking to buy a mini to provde more options at dinner time but more than likely would do this if I had bought a large.

From what I've read and seen in pics the large is a very versitile egg, lots of toys and flexibility therein. It's amazing, absolutley amazing, the cooks folks on this site perform with the large - fequently I ask myself who in the world are they cooking for?

Good luck with your decision, but once an egghead good bye gasser.
  • Did you make a purchase yet? If not go medium and here's why. You will not use your gasser anymore because you will fall in love with the BGE versatility and flavor. Learn on the medium and then buy an XL to expand your cooking functionality. You will start get company when they small what you are making or you will invite to share the amazing results.

Everyone here's telling me to dump the gasser.

Is the egg really as convenient? I realize the trade off may be worth it for the extra flavor. But can it really go from 0 to 60 in about 10 minutes and then get shut off easily?

I don't know why, but I picture the egg as a larger time commitment.
It isn't really, you just change the order for n which you do things. With a gasser, you prep, then go out, turn it on, and cook. With a BGE, you light it up first, then go in and do your prep, and by the time you're done it's ready to cook.

For shut down, close it up and walk away. The coals are ready to reuse the next time.

I got the large, and I wish it was just a little larger. I've spent 30 years with a 22" Weber kettle and the 18" grille on the LBGE is a little cramped sometimes. The XLBGE was just too big though. We're empty nesters and don't do a lot of entertaining. When we do it's usually no more than 4 or 6 total, so I make it work. I still have my Weber for Burgers, Steaks, and such. The LBGE is dedicated to Ribs, Brisket, Turkey, and the like that require a slow smoke or good long roast.

  • I haven't used my gasser in the month I've had my large egg. I haven't done hamburgers yet but I have done steaks on the egg.

i would vote large. My 12lb turkey and the pan its in took up most of my large. It wouldn't have fir in a medium.
