Is this turkey safe to cook??

Well...I bought a frozen turkey on 11/5...put it in the garage fridge to to a "test" run on the Big Easy fryer...and I forgot about it.

Is it safe to cook?--or should I toss?

  • I'd figure 5 days to thaw, so it's only been in there for 5 days. If it doesn't small, I'd run it.
  • unless your fridge temps are screwy, it is fine.

    Good to go.

  • I have found that even if it has gone bad all you have to do is microwave it for awhile, the microwave magic kills the bad stuff and if you leave it long enough it "cooks" the bird for you.

and that just hurts my head. hahaha

  • I would agree with Craig. If it doesn't smell bad it's fine.  It typically takes a turkey or large roast at least 3-5 days to thaw in my fridge.

my freezer is set to zero degrees and it takes every bit of 5-7 days for a complete thaw of a 14 # or so turkey in my beer fridge set at 35 degrees.  There have been plenty of years that after 5 days, my turkey is still partially frozen going into the brine the night before Thanksgiving.  I try and pull my turkey out of the freezer  8-10 days prior to it going into the brine.  Although last year we bought a fresh never frozen turkey so that was easy, however, no one could really tell a difference in the taste though to justify the price difference.

Disclaimer: please don't try this as I'm pretty sure what I am describing is pure poison.

  • @BikerBob I have tried it in the past and I still prefer the pressure treated 2x4 for the fact that they lessen the violent vomiting (not prevent) and that the 2x4 is a light smoking wood.

Also tried steel radial tire ... let me save you the time, not a great idea.

  • ya know... if you go to your local Costco or WalMart, they have the fresh birds out right now and the tags say "never frozen".  The tags also say "sell by 11/27/16" or similar date.  Seems to me even if it was a fresh bird laying around in your fridge for the same amount of time you'd be more than fine.

but if you smell it and its GTG then you won't have that nagging you in the back of your mind at the dinner table.
