OT- Roadkill, deer list

This pertains to folks that live in whitetail areas.  As the rut approaches, and you would like to get some fresh meat for the price of a tag, it might be worth a quick nonemergent phone call to the county and city police depts to see if they have a "deer list".  We're not talkin' I-80 smashed by an 18 wheeler 3 days ago deer.  Fresh meat.

My nephew Q, spotted a nice doe in the ditch on the way home at dusk.  It reminded me to make a few phone calls...to Rock Island County, Andalusia, Milan, Orion, and Coal Valley.   =)

Tags can be picked up quick at WallyWorld.

Don't let good meat, rot away on the side of the road.  =)

  • We were working on a new highway bypass back in the late 80's when we watched a deer car collision. The survey crew had the deer butchered and in a cooler before the tow truck was out of sight.
  • Does anyone know if those deer warning whistles work? The ones that mount under the front bumper.

I have heard they didn't. In our area deer are constantly getting hit.

  • If you hit one personally in IL you can call it in to the dnr. Free deer.

I just got my gun tags the other day, getting a new bow this weekend too.

2 LBGE, Blackstone 36, Jumbo Joe

    Egging in Southern Illinois (Marion)

  • My son killed a really nice 8 point over the weekend.

    They don't work around here.

A co-worker's husband hit a trophy buck in IA, 13K worth of damage on their Silverado HD.  He's a Vet with PTSD, hit him hard in more than one way.  They had it processed, and are getting it mounted.

A tragic accident in Muscatine recently, when a 37 yr old father of 3 was killed, hit a deer in his Canyon pickup, then hit a tree.

I have only hit one deer with a car.

I did hit a nice 9 point buck (he has a couple small tines that I didn't measure, so he might be a 10 pointer) with my 10mm on Saturday though. =)@Focker

    Nice work!
If it's an inch or more long, count it.

    @Cashfan, @johnkitchens,

Brother was out with my nephew tonight. Beau was always anti-call, hooked him up with an Extinguisher deer call.

This beast was called, he strolled in some.  Nephew got nervous, sniggered.  He stopped.  Beau waited, hit the Extinguisher again.  He came in.  Nephew sniggered again.  My brother said he had to drop the hammer through a branch.  You guys may have felt this bruiser pile up on the ground in Alpha.  They named him "Sniggers".  So proud, and PB and Jelly of my Broseph.  This is how we grow 'em out here in flyover country.

After he smoked Sniggers, he called another one in, smoked her with his Mathews too!

Sniggers is getting caped now.  Heading over to his house to help process. Still a little warm yet to age...oh well.  I'm steaking my processing fees on the doe.   =)

One down. Backstraps, loins, hidden loins will be saved, rest gets cleaned up and run through the grinder.

@Focker, Congrats! Those are two nice deer!

We also grind everything, except the tenderloins and backstraps.

I'm hoping to get out all day tomorrow and Saturday and fill my doe tag with my 10mm.

Bought a Hoyt a couple months ago, and plan on going out with that next year. Quite a learning curve, and I have a ways to go before I go hunting with it. Bow and pistol hunting seem much more of a sport than shotgun hunting, and I REALLY don't like being out there with the shotgun boys. There is a lot of lead flying around, and the property I hunt butts up to state land that gets hit hard. Too many people out there can't be good for the hunting.

My buck was chasing a nice doe, and only had ONE thing on his mind. I saw him coming after I let the doe go by and was able to get the pistol on a rest and wait for him to cross the shooting lane, about 30 yards away. He picked a bad spot to stop and sniff.... We didn't weigh, but thinking he was around 170-180lbs.

I took up pistol hunting 4 years ago after not hunting for 10 yrs, because I wanted to get a nice buck with a handgun. I got two does few years ago with a .44, then nothing for a couple years. This is the nicest buck I've ever shot, and to do it my favorite pistol with a textbook shot was unbelievable, especially after a couple of debacles last year. I had to sit down afterwards, I was shaking so bad I was afraid of falling out of the stand.  :)

    You're philosophies are on point.
I went out once during shotgun. Had two nice does get spooked about 50 yards out heading down my path, by an old man with his dumb dog.  If he wasn't over 70, I would've asked if he knew it was shotgun deer season.  Or if he knew what planet he was on. lol

Love the background, and story my friend.

You will get things dialed in pretty quick, it's a Hoyt.  ;)

Have only been out once.  Ripped my back last week, still sore, so the climber is out for now.  A guy was hanging upside down for hours, phone fell out, and somebody heard him yelling.  He's in critical condition and was airlifted.  Scary stuff.  My ranger at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve is paralyzed from a treestand fall.  Super nice guy, does a great job out there.

But I'm off for one week starting tomorrow. And like your buck, my brother's was chasing pu$$.  It's pretty much on like donkey kong at this point.

Enjoy the time in the timber, keep hammerin' that Hoyt, and best wishes bud.  :)
