Band Nut won't tighten

Good evening all.  I am in the middle of a band realignment and the top band but won't tighten. It just keeps spinning. Any ideas on a fix?

Replace the nut and bolt. It's stripped. It happens.
    Thank you,

The bolt is stripped. You need to replace the bolt, and while at it I would replace the nut as well.

Is this something I can get at Home Depot or Lowes? What kind of bolt?

Grade 5 carriage bolt. Doubtful you can find it at Home Depot or Lowe's. Do you have a Fastenal nearby?

You need a Grade 5  5/16" carriage bolts 2" long. I couldn't find them at HD or Lowes. I finally found them a hardware store with a good fastener section.

PM me if you can't find any in your area.

I do, unfortunately they are closed on Saturday and Sunday. I live in a city, so I should be able to find a place that has them. Appreciate the quick response

Try not to overtighten. I've steered clear of nut bands ever since a night of misadventure I experienced with a dominatrix named Monique back in '13.

....Sorry, misread the title there... My bad.

This is the first time I have seen a post about the bolt/nut stripping.. Oddly enough, I just noticed mine doing the exact same thing on my XL.

So I just need to go to a hardware store and get a ' Grade 5  5/16" carriage bolts 2" long. '? Does it need to be stainless (or is that what 'grade 5' means?

Speaking in simple terms: Grade 5 bolts are stronger bolts than Grade 2 (what you will find at HD and Lowes).

grade 5 is stronger than the run of the mill, it will have 3 radial lines on the head. ive never noticed whats on the bge ones

Furthermore the tensile strength of a grade 2 is only 60,000 PSI but a grade 5 is 100,000. Put in real basic terms tensile strength means the force needed to break the metal in half by pulling on it.

Get the Grade 5 and add 2 nuts per bolt for reinforcement.  Should stay tight then.

I can't imagine any fastener on a grill *needing* the strength of a grade 5 bolt.  A grade 2 5/16" bolt w/a strength of 60,000 PSI means it can handle just shy of 4,600lbs.   That bolt has enough tensile strength to support a Ford F150.

Then why does BGE use Grade 5 bolts for this application?

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Don't buy any bolt above grade 5. You want the bolt bend.

Probably has more to do with the materials/finishes available to prevent corrosion.  It's certainly not for strength though.

With strength in metal hardness usually follows suit. You know how the bolt bends as you torque it? A grade 2 would bend much easier and you would likely never get the proper torque on it.  Add in a few expansions and contractions of the egg, and your bolts would yield and loosen up much faster. Also these bolts are not in direct tension and have a good shear and moment load on them as you can see in the bending. A grade 2 would likely still never break, but it might cause other issues. That being said the hole band system on the eggs are terrible, I can never get mine to stay put.
