Expanded steel firebox basket

Has anyone tried making an expanded steel basket that nests in the firebox? I think a basket about 4 or 5 inches tall with a wire folding handle would be pretty cool. That way, after cooking, I could lift the baket with the handle, shake out the ash and dump the old lump in a can. I could then add new lump, add the old lump on top and cook some more. Seems like it would be a lot easier than trying to stir it all around and make sure the firebox holes aren't plugged and hope the grate doesn't move so all your lump drops into the bottom.[p]Ed

    Edintx,
yes that has been done here a few times but I don't recall anyone coming back here and bragging how great it works in reality and that we all needed one - but what the hey...you may take that honor!!!

Edintx,[p]I've got pictures of one and don't recall who sent them to me. From the dates in the rest of the folder it looks to be from 2002. the dimensions are 14-3/4" at the top and 4-1/2 deep with a flat bottom and it has a bail.[p]~thirdeye~

Edintx,[p]I think WooDoggies has one. Maybe he'll report in and nobody will have to do anything.

I used a SS mixing bowl. Drilled holes in the bottom for venting and added a bail for removal.[p]Work A-OK. [p]Got the idea from Eggor.[p]Toy Man

<p />Edintx,[p]Here is a scan of the pictures I have. From what I recall the sides of the expando was tack welded together and a flat bottom piece was welded in.[p]~thirdeye~

Edintx, for my medium I took a vegetable grilling wok, cut it down the side and hammered it into the shape of the firebox. It wound up cone shaped and poked down beyond where the fire grate was located. It took some fine tuning, had to add three bolts to lift it away from the sides of the firebox about ¾ inches. It can easily be grabbed with the grill lifter tool or pliers. Wish I could find pics.[p]It was used exactly as you described; Shake it, dump it, add fresh lump and dump the old back on top. Or just shake it and blast it with the weed burner. Like you I found stirring the semi spent lump and hoping for good air flow to be a minor annoyance. It works great for your day to day, after work grilling. For low and slow you’ll want to pull it and go with the stock setup.

SMITTYtheSMOKER,[p]Mine works well... but it's just a grate, not a bowl of any kind.

drbbq,[p]You have a good memory, Ray. Fellow egger, WilliamH, sent me one of his expanded metal baskets about 3 years ago and I use it every time I cook with my large.
The routine has become.... pull out the basket, give it a shake, put it back, pour some fresh lump on top, light and tend the fire as usual. Very easy. It has become so routine that when I cook on someone elses egg, I first look for the basket....[p]Thirdeye's pictures, in above, post of are of my basket.... gotta go now and catch my flight to Colorado.... be well![p]john
