So I watched a bunch of episodes yesterday because, well, I have a serious BBQ problem right now, and I am a 49er fan-enough said about that.
My my question is, is this stuff real or bogus? I watch the shows about car guys and gals, and it is total garbage. With the way these guys were cooking Tri Tip in length, letting it rest, FTC etc, I was very surprised and got the feeling everything was being made to entertain the uneducated. Some of the stuff they were doing was accurate to what I have seen around here, but I was just curious on your thoughts.

Over the years I have seen many interviews with Myron Mixon. Always seemed like a decent guy. Then he is on a series about bbq cook-offs several years back, I believe the show you mentioned, and he was a loud mouth who cursed all the time. Seemed bogus to me. At the time, many on the old forum shouted B.S. Many had spoken with him at contests, some had cooked with him, and they said he was not anything like that. Most (if not all) reality shows are TV's new professional wrestling.

Nice. I know those box views! Been lucky to have an owner that is good friends with Balke so I get to go in His box now and then.BYS1981 said:

I've seen some posts from fellow Q'ers that have attended his cooking class, and they say he couldn't be a nicer guy and he's always willing to spend time with the students to get it right.
BBQ Pitmasters needs drama and some angst for TV consumption, and Myron stepped up and provided that in spades.Living the good life smoking and joking -
I've always figured the "characters" they play is exaggerated for tv, but the cooking has been legit

In the real judging, judges are not allowed to discuss or make any kind of gestures indicating if you like something or not. You can call over the table captain to discuss (who does not vote), but that's it.
Coming from a real estate background, I can tell you all those shows are complete BS as far as how things really go. In fact, the love it or list it one, they film both endings. Then they show both to a focus group, then air the outcome with higher ratings. -
I've been to the show here in KC, also took Rod Greys pellet envy ( won BBQ pit masters) BBQ class and spoke with the owner of slaps BBQ here in KC as well who was also on that show.
Its real. It's quite a bit different in person though. They stand around a lot and do re-takes quite often during the judging portion.

BBQ Pitmasters has to be taken with a large grain of salt from anyone with some experience in BBQ cooking.
It does, however, put the art out there for those that have never experienced it to see it..............with some drama and angst to help wash it down.
The cooking sure looks legit to me..........and that is why I watch it.Living the good life smoking and joking -
I was just thrown for a loop on the way they were cooking Tri Tip in the episode I watched. I want to say one of them cooked it for like 6 hours, then wrapped it like a Brisket, and I just had a hard time imagining a Tri tip cooking that way.......Just bought an Egg? It's kinda entertaining but it's a TV show so I wouldn't expect a whole lot of reality in it. I've met one of the contestants on the show at a local cookoff. Super nice guy.Aledo, Texas

What I really like is the gear. There are some serious cookers in use on the show.Living the good life smoking and joking -
