My Clean Burn

Last few weeks, I've noticed an unusual amount of black smoke billowing out of my egg. Last weekend, it took darn near an hour for the black smoke to clear - time for a clean burn.
Took the guts out of the egg, gave it a good cleaning ... re-inserted the fire box, fire ring and for good measure tossed in the adj top vent cap. Added some old lump, fired that baby up.
The egg sat @ 700 degrees for about 2 hrs.

The egg took about 4 hrs to cool down, when I opened the dome, I saw lot's of flaky gunk on the internal walls. I used a grate cleaning block (that i got from The Home Depot) to scrape the internals.

It came out pretty darn good, if I say so myself.

Hi Red, I absolutely love the scrubbing stone. It's made from recyclable material, no additives or chemicals added. It cleans the top cooking grate really nice also, in addition to the internal ceramics, best of all they are very inexpensive.RedSkip said:How'd you like that scrubbing stone?I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca. -

Ill have to look into this. I struggle with wanting to use the wire brush. Thought about using the wood plank but can't justify the price. This looks like it could a great solution.

How do you guys clean the dome?
I do do the clean burns when needed for a couple hours at 6-700 F.
My my dome never gets clean. -
@hondabbq ... after the clean burn is complete and after the egg has cooled, open the dome and you'll see the flaky gunk on the dome wall. I use the grill stone (pictured above) to scrape all that stuff away. It works great!I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca.

I hoped but with no avail that it would just burn off. -
I lieu of a stone or wire brush, just use a wadded up ball of HDAF to remove the loose gunk after a burn. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

Perfect, been wondering what the "clean burn" mechanics were, as our MM has gotten itself well gunked up.

I bought the wood plank. I wouldn't do it again. Best tool I got for grates is the BGE forked scraper. Less money too.RedSkip said:Hi Red, I absolutely love the scrubbing stone.
