Stone Crab Season!

Yep, it's that time of year here in FL. I called around to 6 places and the closest place to my house had the best prices... YAY.

Sometimes I heat them up on the Egg, but for the first of the season, these were served chilled.

These were large, 4 per lb. $19.99 a lb. Pretty big compared to my wine glass!

It's very easy to crack them and get the pieces out whole~ Serve them with a homemade mustard sauce. YUM.

Come on down to Florida and try some stone crabs!
Thanks for lookin.
Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!

Awesome.  I'd kill for that setup, except I'd replace the wine with ice cold beer.

Those pictures stir great memories of claws gone by. It will be a month or so before our town's sole fish monger aka thief with a smile will have them in stock - BUT when he does I'll open the wallet for a feast!

Faith's annual Stone Crab Drool Fest. =)

I've never even seen a stone crab. If anyone around here sells 'em, I don't know where they are. The closest decent fish market is nearly 20 miles away so I usually buy whatever crap my local grocery store sells. And that's certainly not stone crab!

Okay, so I just called that "decent fish market". He said not a chance. That basically, if you were paying 20 bucks down there, he'd probably have to charge $50-60 a lb. So even if he could get them, no one would buy them! Oh well.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Oh, that's just NOT FAIR!!!  ;)  Stone crab are my favorite seafood of any, much better than lobster or any other kind of crab I've ever had.  My parents used to live in the keys, and sometimes when I'd visit we'd have stone crab.  Wow, those things are good!  Enjoy!!!!
  • @Theophan - Sorry!!
I agree with you that they are the best of the best.

  • @Carolina Q - You know I put these pics up just to tease you! I figured there would be no way to get them in CT. You can always make a road trip to FL, you know.

This is how we know it's fall in Florida!  For those of you out of state, I get my claws at Key Largo Fisheries - you can order online and they will Fedex them to you.  http://www.keylargofisheries.com.  I have no connection with them, it's just preferred place to get stone crabs.
