Protect patio or deck Under BGE

I noticed they sold pads for the BGE. Looked like a grease pad but as I see it there shouldn't be any grease or oil spill while your cooking if I left the BGE on a brick patio in the nest, is that correct? It has a solid bottom with a 1/2" lip under the access door. Why would anyone need that or am I missing something?

I'm clumsy. I've spilled drip pans, etc. A mat is nice to have.

I use those automotive store oil catch drip pans under all my Q toys as the nature of the process leads to things that gravity seems to attract.

Agree with all above.  It's the application of Murphy's Law when I'm grilling.  Protect your deck or patio. Sooner or later, you'll be glad you did.

I have an egg table. The top has grease and black spots all over it. Most probably from sparks coming off the lump when lighting. I'm always careful and try to clean up any spills but it still happens.

Not a lot of grease from egg cooking, but some.  I have hooks on the end of my table that I hang cooking grids from - I have found some grease has dripped onto the patio for the hanging grids.  I do take meat off the cooking grid to platters next to it on the table - grease sometimes drips off the meat onto the table top and the patio during this operation.  After cooking, the drip pan needs to be removed from the egg - it isn't too hard to spill some of the grease from the drip pan during cleanup.

Overall, I don't get a lot of grease hitting the ground, but some will be inevitable.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.

I don't want to learn from experience on this one. I will have to get some sort of mat as well.
