Pellets for smoke

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Hello,[p]I was in a store today and they sold wood pellets in alder, apple, cherry, oak, hickory, mesquite, maple, etc. for a special smoker that uses pellets.[p]I'm having a hard time finding smoking wood around here other than hickory and misquite and would like to have some of these other woods. My question is, can I use these pellets in the BGE? Seems like I could drop them on the coals just like wood chips. The guy at the store said they only work in the pellet smokers he sells.[p]Anyone tried these?[p]Thanks,
Ray

LBTRS,[p]We used the Mesquite Pellets on our Brisket the other night. It turned out awesome. Check out the smoke rings we got on the picture I posted last night. You don't need a special smoker, or a special smoker box. They go in a little pouch that you make out of foil and poke a tiny hole in it. I think it worked great, just my opinion though, not sure what everyone else thinks. I plan on trying it again with the Spatchcocked chicken. The recipe calls for the BBQr's Delight orange pellets. Mmmm.... I'm getting hungry just thinking about using my BGE.

LBTRS,[p]Yes you can use them just like wood chips and like Stike says, they work just fine for smoking. I've used them many times by tossing on the coals for grilling or mixing in with the lump for longer cooks.
Since the pellets are pretty small, you'd need to take a little more care mixing them in with the lump so they don't work their way to the bottom of the firebox.
Check out the link below for the type I've used.... they're nice to have on hand.[p]john

    LBTRS,
I've used them with great results. I'd do the foil pouch thing vs. trying to scatter them in the charcoal.[p]TNW
