Check your nuts fellers...

Change of seasons today. A good time to double check and tighten the nuts on your band. I might also suggest double checking your domes thermometer accuracy. I could tell a few of mine were off and needed adjusting:

hahaha. I checked band bolts ONCE. About 6 years after I first assembled my egg. Dead solid perfect. Still, I'll probably check again. Eventually.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

If I may be so bold as to say the BGE is not perfect (although very close), if the eggs were designed just a tiny bit differently, we would not have to worry about the dome falling off. On the dome above the band, the egg bulges out to where it is about flush with the band, but there is no bulge under the band. On the base the egg bulges out below the band, but not above the band. If the base and the dome each bulged out below and above, even if the bands were a little loose there would be no way the dome would fall off. To accomplish that would require a redesign of not only the dome and base, but also the hinge because the bands would need to be farther apart from each other. -

Actually long time egger named Char-Woody ( C~W ) made a simple solution kit to secure the band to the dome with small bent pieces of metal which went over that dome ridge. It required drilling holes in the upper band and inserting the flush flat headed machine bolts and then adding an acorn nut for a polished finished look. His flat pieces were even powder coated black. C~W sold these for like $10 per egg and they worked like a charm! He offered the idea free to BGE as a reasonable solution but they rejected him. I know he sold many of these kits for years and then he quit. Too bad as they were a cheap lifetime insurance against the dreaded "non-warranty broken dome" syndrome!SemolinaPilchard said:Thanks for the heads up.

Redoing all mine as I put them in the tables and then after first cook. Domes/caps came off of two of mine. Emailed bge to buy more and some other parts, no return email and no call back from VM. Hopefully dealer can help when I can finally make it there.Bill Denver, CO

I know mine are still there cause they did an ultrasound on them this morning. That was one of life's little adventures...LBGE (still waitin' for my free T-Shirt), DIgiQ DX2 (In Blue, cause it's the fastest), Heavy Duty Kick Ash Basket, Mc Farland, WI.

Upon initial assembly I tightened my bands to the required torque at which point both bolts bent and the nuts stripped. It was snug, but I wasn't getting it any snugger. So...i guess I'll just make sure the bands aren't loose.

Bump!! Checked mine this weekend and one of the hinge nuts where the spring is located was way too loose. Checked and tightened all. Keep checking guys! Might have to try the double nut like @RRP suggested for the bands.
