Replacing Band Bolts

I am replacing the base on my XL today & want to replace the band bolts at the same time. I read somewhere that I should use grade 5 carriage bolts, but I can't find anything marked "grade 5".

I have the original bolts (bent & a bit rusted),  stainless bolts, & regular (I think zinc coated bolts from HD). What should I use when I reattach my band ?

Yes, Grade 5. Look for heads with markings like these...

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Paul B Zimmerman's hardware has them and is fairly local to you.

Fastenal probably has them too. There's one in Manheim. Though I've seen them lots of places.

The local Fastenal in Morgantown doesn't have them in stock, have to special order them, FWIW.

I would try Ace, Lowe's or my best one around here, True Value. Otherwise... duct tape I guess. =)

  • Carriage bolts don't to the best of my limited knowledge have markings on the head. They are only torqued to 120 inch pounds, I think-that's 10 foot pounds. Make sure to get galvanized to keep them from rusting as bad.

Yep, they do. Same as hex heads...
