Returning the BGE-L

Well after about three weeks of cooking on the BGE-Large and the Green Mountain Pellet Grill, I have decided to reach out to my dealer and start the process of returning my Big Green Egg Large.  It's been fun to cook on, and learn about temps, and chat with all of you, but the reality is, is it just doesn't work for myself and my family.  We are constantly feeling a little unsatisfied at the table when it is all said and done.  I hope the dealer I work with really is sincere about their return for any reason policy, because the BGE-XL is going to work out for us so much better!!
Just bought an Egg?  Here is what you get to look forward to now:

Plate Setter, FlameBoss 200, Spider, PSWOO-CI, Additional Rig Shelf for dome cooking, Thermapen, iGrill2, Cast Iron, Blackstone, Cooking Accessories for the Blackstone, Cover for the Egg and the Blackstone, shopping for Rub like a fine wine or IPA, and a new fascination with lump and what brand is the best-all to be debated every Friday Night.  Next desires-Joetisceriie, Adjustable Rig, Grillmates, table and more eggs

Good call I had 2 larges at one point and like my XL better. So nice to have the room.
  • Great setup for the story, I thought that you were through with egging. Instead of returning the large, you may want to considering also getting a small or medium. With a medium and your large you will have a combined cooking space just a few inches shy of an xl, and the ability to cook two different meats at two different temps. Just a thought.

Keep the Large and get the XL as a sidekick. You won't complain about the added capacity.

I think my ideal setup would have been an XL and a medium. But if I add an AR to my large, the large:small combo is pretty nice too. Really like the small!

  • Dang it....now you guys are making me think about it......maybe I should hang onto the large and add a small.  If I do that though, the wife is Definitely going to make me wait, but if I upgrade to the XL, for some reason, that is "OK".

Go big or go home :)  I have an XL, and as I have stated before, it is the only one I need (for now :) ) I have even lit it for a single hotdog. and it was worth it.
  • Have you considered the minimax as an addition? Then you can take it on family trips or to the relatives to cook there. I now have a MM, L & XL.  Haven't used the XL yet since I'm waiting on the outdoor kitchen to be done. Just get at many as you can really. Can't have too many.

Trade your large for the XL. Then in a few months say honey, if we had a smaller egg it would be easier to fire up for quick, small cooks.

I would think inferno temps in the XL would be frightening to work with. Even on the large it gets a little hairy. Searing at full blast on the small is a lot of fun though.

I'd keep the large and get a medium or a small. Having 2 eggs to cook on at once really opens up options. Just my .02

Don't listen to people here. ;)

What you should really do is...

I think no matter what size you have, you'll want a second egg which would be great for different cooks.  But get one that's big enough that you can cook what you want to normally without running two in parallel for the same cook.  I don't have my second egg yet, but having an XL means I don't want one as often.

I bought my second egg as another large, which worked well.  I have now added an XL but still thing the second large at the time was the best move.

Love my XL. I think you're in a no lose situation with this choice. Also..you got me with the story, I don't even know you but felt relieved at the end :-)

I have an XL and if I could afford another, it'd be a MM, probably.   Good for 2 persons while the XL is good for when the ARMY comes and camps out.
  • Definitely leaning towards the XL upgrade. Just have to figure out when I am going to have time to take the large apart, haul it back to the store and then put the new one back together. That is some eggless nights with my schedule!

  • I almost talked myself into a Large, but luckily I got the XL.  I will say now I would like a second BGE maybe large or medium.  So just keep the large and go ahead and get the XL too!

Before digging out the SnapOns, call your dealer and see if he'd take the trade-in back, fully assembled.  A lot of customers would prefer to buy it that way (especially if its been used; I'd dislike pulling blackened parts out of plastic and cardboard).
    I bought my Large preassembled.

I have the XL and medium at home.  I use the XL about 65%of the time, the medium about 25% of the time and both about 10% of the time.  I have a large at my cottage and I like it just fine it just takes a bit more thought and accessories to cook for large groups.  (AR with extended grate).  If I could have only one it would be the XL.  I think Iwhen the times comes I'll be cremated and buried in it.
