    I had every intention of using maple, but found no suitable scraps wide enough. Then I looked for oak since it is strong but soft enough to wear down. Ended up with this piece of cedar which may be too soft, but with "noting invested" its no great loss.

    Not for home use! I have just scraped using a putty knife for years. As for cleaning them well that was my practice when teaching class to newbies since they don't understand the well used grate look.
