So if the lump has not reduced to ash or small pieces, I assume it is ok to reuse for another cook?

absolutely - this is why I'm such a fan of the kick ash basket.Phoenix

Yes (Just stir and then add fresh lump on top of the old)

Absolutely-knock off the ash, reload to your preferred cooking level and have at it. Make sure the air-holes are clear. Thus the suggestion to always load heavy. Just snuff the fire at the end of cook and reuse. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. You can get several cooks from a full load of lump. Just check on the ash build up from time to time and clean as necessary.Bill

A bonus is it eliminates having to wait for the VOCs ('bad smoke') to burn off

In my experience it fine to use, however I don't think it will burn as hot the second cook. That's not a problem on most cooks. For cooking steak I like fresh lump in order to get maximum temps.
