Egg glued to stand!

The base of my EGG recently cracked.  No big deal, I got a replacement base under warranty. It arrived today and I went to install it. When I tried to remove the old base from the stand, it wouldn't budge. I looked closer, and the plastic feet on the stand are glued to the base!!!

I always thought the exterior of my EGG got unusually hot. Even at  250 or 300 F burn, I would be unable to touch the dome any more than a quick tap before it felt uncomfortable to the touch. Is that normal? Is it normal for these plastic feet to glue to the base? And, any suggestions on how to get this unstuck so that I can get the new base on!?

A thin knife will probably work. Be sure to clean all the vinyl off of the nest before you put the new base in. It's a common problem and will happen again even if you get new caps. Don't know what they were thinking when they started providing these. Older nests don't have the vinyl.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • my thinking was the vinyl caps were to protect the paint of the nest during shipping, but not for use between the nest and the egg.

should come off i think.  i wouldn't do it hot, but rather when totally cold.

hope it doesn't pull off any glaze, given it may be melted into the crazing (cracks in the glaze) a bit, almost mechanically connected (locked onto the cracks).

kind of off if they shipped those without a warning to remove them in use.

the base gets awful hot, given that it is holding thousand-plus degree lump

  • Thanks, Darby & Carolina.

I thought you were supposed to keep the caps onto protect the green glaze? If it does pull some off when I separate them, no big deal because I'll be using the new base. :)

@Carolina Q -- are the old stands exactly the same except without the plasti/vinyl caps?  If so, I will just not use those any more on the new base.

would be interesting to know the official BGE position on this.  seemed to me that they were prone to melting, but i dunno what the party line is

Good point, Darby. Say the melted vinyl caused the glaze to fail then surely that would be a valid warranty claim. Anybody privy to detailed warranty "wills and won't"?

Cut with a utility knife, remove, and carry on with new base.

I recall it stating in the instructions to place the vinyl caps at the end of assembly.  I don't think they are shipping materials, but another BGE blunder.

I bought my egg in January this year and the caps were not on but in a separate plastic bag. Putting them on was a step in the assembly instructions.

  • I cut a wine cork in half and used it as a spacer for the thermometer like a lot of people do. Unfortunately and maybe it was cheap wine, but it wasn't real cork and melted and allowed the thermometer to sink down into it and stuck to the egg.  I couldn't get the thermometer out because it was stuck and it held the adjustment nut solid so when I tried to turn the thermometer the needle stayed in the same place.  I thought if I really pulled hard it would crack the glaze off the egg.  So, I let it heat up and get soft and then pulled it out and scraped it off the egg. I replaced with the real cork and I'll see how that one will do.  The reason I say all this is I'm not sure if I would try to separate it cold or not.  You might consider letting it get warm and then trying to slide something in between it and the egg.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I just loosened the stand and that made it much easier to get a small knife in there to do the surgery and get the caps off.

Now the big question, get replacement caps or just use the new base naked against the metal part of the stand? Suggestions welcomed!

Naked.  I threw my other two new sets away after having a meltdown on the first nest.

  • My egg was set up at the house by my local dealer and the pads melted to mine as well.  I posted something about it when it happened and the consensus was "that's normal".  Guess it's just a BGE fault.

I'm not a fan of metal against ceramic. Seems like a good way to chip the ceramic as things expand and contract during use. I don't care if they melt a bit as long as they provide the buffer.
