Mussing about lump and fish...pic heavy

Started a thread awhile back regarding different lump...yeah, I know, me and everyone else. But after opening my bag of BGE lump I have to say (happily) at least here you get what you pay for, man those pieces are nice and big!

added a few chunks of hickory...turned out one would have been enough, edging on the toooo smokey side...

I have not been able to score Royal Oak or the other highly recommended brands, the only thing I can tell you is that Frontier and Cowboy are a very dismal last place. For now, it seems, I will have to overpay (?) for the BGE bags...

Anyway, on to the cook of the day. Tuna steak for me, Coho for me better half. Decided to use indirect, but with a small griddle for some nice searing lines. I didn't put it directly on the CI grate as I've had problems with overcooking, this little grid seems to be a bit better in catching the juices and not drying out the fish. Put a little Montreal Steak seasoning on then a few ears of corn as well.

Now sitting down to enjoy:

I like it, looks like you scored a nice bag!

Great set-up and cook.  Your timing is perfect-free shipping from fire craft (no $99 minimum) for this week.
Here's the link:  http://www.firecraft.com  You can expand your lump horizons delivered to your door.  FWIW-

Royal Oak is available at Home Depot all the time. At least the one by me always has it.

FWIW, n=1 experience. Switched from BGE to Rockwood (Firecraft) - definitely note a difference. Had the same BGE experience - lots of really big pieces, but a few rocks.  1st Rockwood bag not as many really large pieces, but much more uniform. To me, BGE definitely gave a heavier smoke profile and Rockwood much more neutral - allowing me to control smoke flavors with add in chunks....  Rockwood also giving me more consistent temps (or I'm finally starting to figure out control a little bit). Thanks for reading

Thank you kindly for the tip! Just went to their site and ordered three 20lb bag of Rookwood, no S&H fees, NICE! I am very anxious to try this brand out and have had it on my radar for a long time.

As far as Home Depot goes, yes I know that many stores do carry the RO, however, none in a 100 mile radius in my area (NE PA) and the managers here said they cannot special order it in for me, all the big chains in my area are overloaded with Frontier and Cowboy...BJ's, HD, Lowes, Ace, you name it. You'd think there was a factory around the block!

Given NE PA- go back to the firecraft site and give them a call.  I recall they are in eastern PA (not where from a north/south perspective).  Several here have arranged for a warehouse pick-up (handy when the $99 minimum is back in play.)

Firecraft is in Westchester. I did pick up thinking it might spare the lump more handling, even though I always seem to clear $99 - Rockwood plus rubs, an injector, KAB, .....

Indeed, its about an hour+ south of me, and I want to visit the store just to check out "things". You can't have too many "things". I'm starting to think that in retirement, opening up a nice grill storefront where I can cook everyday and hand out free samples would be awesome. I could be the Mother Theresa of the Kamado grilling world. I coulda been a contender...

Not much of a store as it is really an add on to a jeep customizing parts business - but great customer service on the phone and via email and happy to chat if you go. Go for it on the grilling store - I'll be a regular!  Based on what I hear about egg dealers in other parts of the country there's a whole different standard of support and "things" - you can still be a contender!

Seems like many BGE dealers are add-ons to another business. One Ace Hardware store in my area used to be a dealer...then a Patio furniture store did it, now a pool supply company expanded into grills and carries BGE items. I'd like to see a store like the one in Florida that my buddy visited that was ONLY grill stuff. He said it was packed with people. Of course they can grill year round in Florida, assuming you don't mind the excessive heat during the summer.
