Outdoor Kitchen with Trex Skin
So I started construction on my outdoor kitchen. framed up with PT lumber, 1/2" Durock sheathing. All seams taped up with Pella window/door tape. The plan is to install Trex Spiced Rum fascia around the outside and top off with granite.
I have it all built and taped, picking up the Trex today... but yesterday it (finally) rained here in OH - like a downpour. I had my kitchen covered, but some of the sides got wet and I noticed that the cement board acts more like a sponge than a water barrier. This got me thinking, so I called Durock and talked to a tech who said just that, it absorbs water. He said all this is normal and suggested that I install Tyvek wrap around the kitchen to allow for moisture barrier while still allowing the cement board to breathe.
Has anyone else done something similar? The smallest roll of Tyvek wrap is $65 and I'll have enough to do 5 kitchens...
Oh, and before everyone loses their mind on building the kitchen with PT wood and the fire hazards of the egg, rest easy the LBGE will be nestled at the end, free standing, by itself, surrounded by stone veneer.

Love projects! Need pics! (I used Trex on my deck and have been very reasonably happy with it after 10 yrs... 1 plank shows delamination; not sure why..., but the rest are perfect.)

I'll take/post when I get home today. Any opinions on the Tyvek? required? not?

My setup has interior walls that have hardibacker then stack stone and the exterior is hardiplank boards over plywood. I'd assueme Durock is the same or similar to hardibacker and that portioin of my build does not have a lining (Tyvex). For the area where hardiplank is on plywood, that was skinned with a moisture barrier. Not sure of the brand, but same concept you are describing. The kitchen is under a patio cover but it does get some wind driven rain. We also sealed all seams and inspect from time to time. Still a fresh build, but all is good so far.
FWIW - mine is built on PT lumber as well, but the egg is surrounded by hardibacker, then stone ledger and sits on a concrete counter pour. Air gap included :-) Did a lot of research on this and had to buy a ridiculously expensive fire box for the gas unit.
Look forward to seeing your pics!

Was waiting for that. I have some on my phone. And your post allows me to correct my "assueme" above :-)

And here is the finished product (with a few more tweaks to come):

Don't have any on phone of the hardiplank sides and I misspoke, egg is surrounded by ceramic tile on the sides that get warm at most. Patio has been extended for seating and upgrades have come for football season (tv, ceiling fans, etc.)
About three months in and the gasser on the left is the most expensive warming tray that I've ever purchased. :-)

I really like that set up, I love the 2 burners, I am always running back and forth from the kitchen to the deck. I have officially stolen that idea.. now... the question is hard pipe gas, or propane. I think I'll do propane, I'm not running that line lol.

Any construction going on nearby? I'll bet you could score some of the Tyvek wrap from one of those sites for cheap.
