Smoked Pork Shanks

I am attempting to smoke some porkshanks on the BGE...and the shanks are about 75% covered with skin. (Now I know why a football is called a "pigskin!").....Should I attempt to remove the skin prior to smoking the shanks? Or score the skin? With the amount of skin on these things I don't see much use in using a rub on them.
