ThermoPop...why the price swings?

I will eventually get a thermopen, but, I think the thermopop will do for now. However, I see that on Amazon it is priced at approx $77-$82 but on other sites its as cheap as $29

Are there different models? Am I missing something?
Thanks!

It's usually 30 bucks a pop(hehe!) Amazon isn't always the cheapest place to get things. The swings are probably people that are very proud of their re pops for sale. I'd recommend just buying from Thermoworks.
-
Yes, I think that is the best way to go...a little disappointed in Amazon though, they usually are extremely competitive. But, remember, as a prime member I would be getting FREE shipping LOL!

The Thermoworks stuff sold on Amazon is not sold by Amazon itself. It is being sold by third parties at outrageous prices and probably sans warranty.flyerdoc said:I will eventually get a thermopen, but, I think the thermopop will do for now. If you want to buy anything from Thermoworks just order it directly from them via their website.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
Thermoworks has a banner on their site with an explanation.

OK folks, now, what about the thermoworks laser IR GUN S... only $39 and it could be interesting to use to get grill/grid temps. Not sure I REALLY need it but it does look interesting.

You can get one of those non-Thermoworks IR thermos for $15 or so these days. Work just as well.flyerdoc said:OK folks, now, what about the thermoworks laser IR GUN S... only $39 and it could be interesting to use to get grill/grid temps. I just looked for other IR thermos but can find nothing as cheap as $15...even Wally World. Do you know of a specific brand?HeavyG said:

All of these (even my old Fluke) are made in China. I've got a couple of the cheaper $20-ish models and they all work fine. I'm betting the Thermoworks IR guns (at least the cheaper models are also made in either China or Taiwan. Their Thermapen models/line are made in the UK but much of their other stuff is made elsewhere.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
Thanks very much HeavyG, you are a fountain of information

Pay attention to the max temperature of the cheap IR thermos. Some top out in the 600-700ºF range. Won't help you if doing a high temp pizza cook.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
The IR thermometers are also great for preheating a flat top to creat different cooking zones and for pre- heating your cast iron griddle or skillet when searing a steak or chops.
Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

Like lots of equipment, you get what you pay for. This applies for IR guns.
The cheap ones seem to have a very wide variation in temps (no repeatability). Not sure if the spread is to wide for shooting more than a foot or so away, or they are just that inaccurate. I really like my Fluke IR gun. Very repeatable and able to adjust emissivity.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

I bought one of these and it arrived yesterday. https://lavatools.co/products/javelin-pro?variant=4068709701
Did a Turkey today and compared it out of the box with my Thermopen. Same temp and just as fast each time. The Javelin Pro is backlit and my Thermopen is not.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I use an IR gun all the time. Pizza stone, skillet, cooking oil, works fine on all of them. It's not calibrated correctly, but it's close enough.Aledo, Texas

I have this one and it seems to work great. I don't have anything else to compare it to for surface temp applications, but it gives me an instant and stable reading. It actually works well to measure liquids on the stove (which I wasn't sure it would even do). It typically measures about 2 degrees lower than my themapen.HeavyG said:Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
A lot of terrific information, I did order one of the cheaper IR handhelds that HeavyG suggested. I am still mulling over which temp unit to get...thermapen/Pop/Javelin

Just get the pop. It will read in 3-4 sec. Use the money saved for some good meats.

I got a $20 IR gun for Christmas that I asked for because I couldn't the nice Fluke one my wife got for free from work years ago. Then when cleaning out out boxes I found the Fluke. They both work great and I use them to check the temp of my GrillGrates before putting meat on to make sure they at 500 or above when the egg is 400.
I believe this is the one I got for Christmas:
