Another BGE vs KJ (just kidding)

I came across two really good deals a few weeks back and purchased two used minimax's. One of them was used and the other was completely new and i was very happy with them but due to finances i had to cut them out of the picture. Aside from that, one motivating factor was my health(back/neck issues) limited how far i could take them or even cooking at home(i live in apartments). Neither was covered by warranty since i didn't purchase them through an authorized retailer and i am now wanting a Kamado Joe Jr. Customer service/price/weight was my personal decision to change but thats only towards the minimax. If i had a house i wouldn't mind a Large BGE or any other size since i wouldn't be moving it. My question with all this is aside from the kamado joe roadshows is there anywhere else somebody has found a good deal and its covered by warranty? I regret not buying a Minimax at the Athens eggfest with the heavy discount they had. I'm in the market for a minimax or JR but nothing over $500.

I think about the best your going to do new is a road show for a KJ Jr. $399.00 if memory serves. Or try CL.

While the KJ Jr. is a few pounds lighter than the MiniMax neither of them is something I would want to have to frequently pick up/maneuver if I had neck/back issues.
How are you going to be able to use them in your apartment? Will you be able to leave them out on your patio or balcony? Or will you have to bring them inside you apartment when finished using them? Does you apartment even allow use of charcoal grills?

Its such a hassle and i regret ever knowing BGE/Kamados exists and i can't get over the eggdiction. I have been wheeling it out on a metal garden cart and it sits outside of my door/patio during cooks. The problem i had with the Minimax was the awkwardness when you carry it since the handle or hinge are pressed against your body. I also have a lot of closer dealers for KJ vs BGE. The few times i have reached out to my BGE dealer they were unaware of the newer vs older Minimax or other questions i have gotten the answer here vs thru them.Austin, Tx

Btw i had to sell my BGE since i left the refrigerator door open over the weekend while we visited friends and family out of town and all the food we just bought before we left spoiled! Have to replace my refrigerator and food before i get a kamado! haha
Here is the cart i would use.Austin, Tx -
And I thought my weekend was rough...hope you get things turned around.

Ah...I see you have a cart/wagon that you use.
One thing you might measure - the width of your cart/wagon. The bottom ring of the stand of the KJ Jr. has a diameter of about 19.5". Would want to make sure it would fit in there.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
I had to cook burgers on this grill this past weekend since i don't have an egg anymore and boy oh boy did i get a slap in the face. Charcoal took forever to heat up since i refused to use lighter fluid. When the fire got going burgers fell thru the grate etc etc.Austin, Tx

I think $400 at the Costco road show is as good as you can do. You could watch for coupons at Ace Hardware. I seem to recall some people got a good deal at Ace because they were on sale and there was a 10-15% off coupon available.
Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
I checked out the KJ's last night and i didnt like the texture of the internal ceramics on the KJ. It seems more fragile/less dense in a way. Girlfriend also agreed she liked Big Green Eggs and didnt want me to change from the MiniMax to Kj Jr.Austin, Tx

I've not bought suits before because I didn't like the texture of the material but can't say that texture has ever swayed my decision on a grill.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -

The Jr shell is thinner than the rest of the KJ lineup. I haven't heard of one cracking yet. They seal up well, are quite efficient, heat up fast, and light enough to move by myself.
You could always get an Akorn Jr. -
bgeaddikt said:Texture both inside and out, felt like the Akorn, less density, mass, etc. I don't make a decision based off of cosmetic looks or appearance, its how it is built and made out of that influenced my decision. It weighs less for a reason. Best way to put it in my opinion is the shell of the KJ felt thinner and BGE feels thicker/stronger

Those would be an ideal little kamado for someone looking to camp/travel or just hump around an apartment or condo. What did they weigh - 35-40 pounds?“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk
